>>1694461>Is it horribly expensive to buy a set/have them installed at a bike shop? That looks like the original stem, so you'll have to find some bars with a diameter of 25.4mm. In my experience shops that even have vintage bikes wont even have vintage parts, but it's worth it to ask anyway. eBay will probably be a better bet. You'll need brake levers also, so maybe look out for some older dia-compe levers on ebay as well.
While you're doing all this, you may as well change the cables and housing as well. Considering cable housing cutters are expensive and assuming you don't have a cut off wheel, take measurements and ask your bike shop to cut the housing for you. Otherwise, installation is as easy as how it comes off.
And yes, downtube shifters are great. Changing the cables for those is even easier than the brakes because there isn't any housing you have to worry about apart from the bit where it meets the derailleur.
When you get your cables and housing from your lbs, DON'T FORGET to ask for crimp ends and ferrules.
Also, is the bike steel or aluminum? If it's steel, make sure to take out the stem and the seatpost and grease them so they don't seize. And if they are seized, pb blaster and deadblow hammers are your friends.
Post it when you get it and clean it up.
