Is the Tern (GSD or HSD) worth it?

Been looking to get rid of our second car for a bicycle. Mostly this would be used for commuting the kids to daycare (~3km) and then to work straight after (~14km).

So far I've been looking mostly at the Tern GSD but Bike 43 is looking like a good bet as well. Also also been looking at Babboe and Bakfiets and various other cargo bikes with a front cargo box, but I think if I want to continue my commute to work after dropping the kids off I would probably prefer a 2-wheel one, not a 3-wheeled one.

Wondering if anyone here has experience with either one, or some totally different recommendation?

frankly that seems really stupid. terns are folders with a short wheelbase. a cargo bike needs a long wheelbase. this will be unstable and suck dicks all day long under a bridge

stability. stability is achieved by low center of gravity and long wheelbase. that's why the salsa marakesh is a looooong bike. that's why the rad runner cargo is a looooong bike. that's why Rivendell "Just Ride" boomers tell people to buy looooong bikes with a loooong rake on the fork

a lot of cargo bikes are just long to avoid heel strike. The stability of lwb is only really a requirement at high speeds. I used to carry 40lbs of groceries on a dahon 20" folder and it was totally fine, just a bit dodgy when hitting 20mph downhill. If bombing down hills as fast as possible isn't a requirement, the tern gsd stuff is probably long enough.

no, they are also long to stabilize the cargo. look at the salsa blackborow that's long to provide stability. think about a pickup truck....does it have a short or long wheelbase

To the OP, you do not want that bike. Do a 360 and walk away. The design is a basket case. The mere location of the Bosch battery pack(s) alone is enough for me to say 'fuck Tern'. That asshole who decided to mount the battery there is- a fucking asshole. Enjoy pulling your cargo if you need to access the battery(ies) along with getting the battery key in there to turn the lock cylinder(s) all the while your loose keys scratch the shit out of your frame over time. Got a kid? Do you think that kid wants to smell your asshole every time you ride somewhere? You're also limited to carrying one child. Have something heavy? Enjoy stabilizing a high center of gravity as you ride through your metropolis 'utopia'. Additionally the amount of cargo you need to transport is much more limited than other cargo models available for the same price or slightly cheaper. The Tern has two seat post clamps, kek. Underperforming dick brakes, lmao. Where I live in Switzerland, there are a few mothers who have that exact model and every time I pull up on my Riese & Muller Packster 60 they lament about how the should have bought the bike I have on cargo space and low center of gravity alone, or the fact that my kids can comfortably sit and see everything around them without looking at my sweaty ass crack all day and also have an optional rain/snow cover which can be easily fitted to keep them dry...or cargo dry for days when I'm solo. Of course if you want to signal to people you're a fucking retard who hates money, by all means buy that bike especially with the dual battery pack.

Yeah, center of gravity (low) seems to be the talk of the town lately. And I'm starting to agree that I might want to look at a front loaded cargo bike in stead.

Unfortunately the R&M is almost double the price of a Tern here (Finland), and that's without any of the extras (so basically the barebones version, pic related is 8549 € compared to a fully loaded Tern with all bells and whistles is 5493 €)

Also quick note: The Tern is not limited to one child, you can install two seats on it and it has the same Tektro hydraulic brakes as the R&M. But that's beside the point, the point is I don't think I can justify the R&M at that price point when I can get a Babboe with 80Nm torque, and tektro brakes front and back + all extras like rain cover for the kids etc. for 4k € (less than half).

Agreed, max load on the Babboe is 205kg which might be enough (I didn't find the R&M specs for max load).

The Load is their super high end cargo bike and is completely unnecessary. There is no need for dual suspension and frankly, I wish mine came with a front rigid fork. Also, mine has XTR m9120 brakes, shifter and rear derailleur, SLX cassette and chain. You can get a Packster out the door with what you need/fully loaded from around 4500 to 5000 euros. I bought mine as a prior season model, such that I have a 2019 model and bought this in 2020 and whipped the manager of the bike shop to get it out the door with some extras for 3400 euros. Look around for a prior year...they are out there, but be prepared to pay right there on the spot if you haggle. You can do it... Also, Cube just launched a cargo bike line which are a pretty good value for the money. Larry Vs. Harry make pretty sick cargo bikes with full Shimano XT components; all of these are front loaders.

The large Packster and the two Loads all cost nearly the same at 6300-6500€ starting. The Packster 40 is the cheaper one at 4700€ starting, but its cargo space and features also worryingly limited. If I was OP and apparently was willing to spend thousands on a cargo ebike I'd configure a Cube Cargo or eBullitt (both 4800€ starting), the former probably coming out a bit cheaper optioned out and looking better with its box (and probably having better passenger safety) but the latter looking better without a box and being considerably more lightweight.

Could matter if you have to lug it around in tight quarters, like getting it into your indoor parking space at home or at work. 35kg will be far more manageable than 47kg even if you're only lifting one wheel.

Not true, but the shorter the wheelbase the larger the tires that are needed. Turn defies that logic intentionally so that they can make a stronger wheel that wont get bent too easily and tries to add stability with chubby balloon tires

This becomes a sort of wobbly base to support a load with and turns are different.

Personally any company that was dealing with these factors is somewhat satirical in naming their bikes after something that feels weird about the bike's maneuverability

Its design IMO uses the "Weirding Way" to attract buyers due to the "impressive rack" on back

The reality is that these are designed more for a set of kids seats which is their best use and most valued option from buyers with kids to carry. The bosch is a piece of trash like other attempts so far to "innovate" this perk into a perfectly working bike.

The Dual Drive accomplished all that in a set of internal geared hubs.
