Left hand shifters

How do I use the left hand shifters on my bike? I got the hang of right hand shifting when I'm climbing up or going down slopes but everytime I try to experiment with the left hand gear I can feel my chain coming off and it's a struggle getting the pedals back to the consistency I need.

Any tips?

Depending on your gears shifting up/down in front is roughly equivalent to shifting 2 or 3 times in back, so you probably want to shift both front and back at the same time in opposite directions if you don't want a huge jump (some say there's risk of the chain falling off if you shift both at exactly the same time but I haven't had problems)

for a clean shift you want to keep pedaling but without putting any (or hardly any) force on the pedals, just keep the pedaling motion going
also look up some front derailleur adjustment video because yours probably needs a tuneup. it's not hard.

I have never heard about people needing to get a "hang" of shifting lol. You just fucking shift. Lower gears for acceleration and upphill, higher gears for Speed and flat/downhill.

Just shift gears right before you need them. Much easier than shifting when its already too hard at slopes lol

I don't understand the problem. Generally you barely ever use the left hand shifters. Only when you start or end a longer climb. First use the available gears on the large front blade, only when those become too heavy, or you have to shift too far down and the chain goes too much at an angle to run smoothly, do you need to use the smaller front blade.

if you're on a 54/36 for example before you climb you should be shifting your FD to the 36 and your RD up by 2 sprockets to get both a little extra cadence and prevent you from dropping the chain while you're going uphill with high torque
however if your chain is grinding, feels shitty, or you're getting big slaps when shifting your FD, you most likely need a derailleur adjustment/new cabling/cleaning FD and chain/new chain/new chainrings, or all of the above
