With the price of plywood these days it might be cheaper to do the foam board method. I know people who have used both methods. The foam board method is lighter and ideal for modular layouts. Something to keep in mind though is the potential for fire. We had a local about two years ago who suffered and electrical short and it ignited the foam board and newspaper he was using as fill for a mountain or hill on his layout. Luckily he had fire extinguishers within reach. The risk is pretty low but there none-the-less.

Kind of a dumb question, but its on topic. Has 3d printing come far enough along that a high enough quality consumer model can match, say, bachmann quality? I know you can buy standalone powered trucks and pantographs and whatnot, but bodies and floors are another story. I've been wanting to model some of the mass transit around my hometown but outside of a few F40 recolors and one out of production LRV from the 60s, nobody does any MBTA stuff.

Basic FDM printing has still a ways to go, But Resin Printing is really good for Highly detailed models. Like this on Shapeways, Unfortunately it still doesn't compare to a Mold

honestly with some sanding and a good paintjob that would look OK, at least for HO scale stuff. really, light rail in general is underrepresented in model railroading. Boston alone had like 6 different varieties of PCC at one point or another, never mind LRVs and heavy-gauge subway stuff.
