The cost of a train fare in the EU is comparable to a commuter flight, and it still takes longer because trains have to make frequent stops and have to follow the terrain.

Soon, flight isn't going to be an option. Major companies are adopting questionable practices including diversity hires for pilots, management decisions not made by the most qualified. Should've been smart enough to realize the electric train could be powered on renewables for generations to come while the turboprop will require constant fuel consumption for the rest of its life. This is the true advantage of trains when you think long term, significantly lower fueling costs

If I have to go downtown to catch a train, parking will be outrageously expensive (and long term parking might not be available), so I have to spend twice as long or longer getting to the train station on public transport as I would just driving to the airport & parking there

Depends on the trip, actually. I flew between two cities that I regularly drive between back in November thinking I'd save a couple hours. One flight wound up having a maintenance delay during my layover in O'Hare and with going through security and layover, I think it wound up taking an extra 30 minutes compared to my typical drive. Obviously that's not too bad, but if I had the option to ride a high-speed rail line, that would've been about an hour and a half quicker than driving, or two hours quicker than flying. On a regular schedule, I think that flight would probably be about the same time commitment as HSR.

No. Trains are prohibitively expensive. I can fly to the other side of europe for cheaper than I can ride to the closest cities to me by train. This is the same everywhere I've been in northwestern europe. I even flew from london to budapest then budapest to manchester because it was cheaper than the train between london and manchester.
