i don't see an alternative to ICEs taking over unless you get broad mandates from all governments to only make electric cars. even so, people are gonna be pissed when they realize the batteries have to be replaced every 9 years and they can't perform well in cold temperatures. furthermore, the material input to making electric cars is massive and the world won't be able to support the US, Canada, UK, and the EU states burning through rare earths/expensive metals necessary to support it worldwide.
they're expensive toys to make rich people feel good about "doing the right thing" and a way to get a tax credit, just like solar panels.
