Sup,

let's share our experience with issues with bicycle tires and recommendations for good brands.

I tried the "Schwalbe Hurricane" on my "go everywhere" bike and had two fucking punctures in approx. 300km.

I'll go back to riding "Schwalbe Marathon MTBs", as my other bike with "Schwalbe Marathon" had not a single puncture in 4 years of daily riding through all kinds of glass and shit.

If you have experience with airless tires I would be really interested in knowing how they feel to ride.

Honestly I have the GP5000s and they are fantastic. I have broken glass covering a street nearby me that I pass through every day and never got a puncture.

wut? I've had 3 of these on my MTB and the only flat I had was after driving into a fucking nail. Other than that I could ride them until they lost their rigidity. You probably just got unlucky.
If you actually like riding and not just use it for moving from A to B I advice against airless tires because the handling is completely and utterly shit.

This is really going to anger certain anons, and they know who they are, but the truth is if you want to enjoy the ride then you're going to have to risk punctures, in other words heavy armour plated tyres ride like shit, the best solution I found, and pay attention to this because it's fucking gold, I spent years playing around with various combinations of tyres and tubes before I found the ultimate balance between puncture resistance and ride quality - Schwalbe Kojaks with Maxxis Flyweight tubes, I have been using this combination for my daily commute, which takes me on 5 miles of dreadful roads, a couple of miles of gravel track and then a mile of shitty industrial estate roads, in other words thorns, broken glass and other shit literally everywhere and I only had 2 punctures in the past 3 years. That's about 14 miles cycling 5 days a week for over 160 weeks and the bike is as light and as nimble as a 14 year old Russian gymnast, two fucking punctures, yeah, I'll take them odds all day long.

You can do what you want with this info, frankly I don't fucking care what you do, I'm just telling you that this is the best fucking option I found after years of experimentation, the bike feels amazing, this set up is like 1/3 of the weight of a Memethon supreme plus normal tube set up.

Patrician taste.
Frame, drive-train and brakes are all from 1991, the wheel set is from 2005 and the stem, seat post, saddle etc are from all over the place and were all chosen specifically for comfort and lightness, just like the tyre/tube combo. these old RM's really are amazing bikes to ride on or off road, perfect commuter platforms.

Saw a study somewhere that showed slick tyres, as in properly slick with no tread whatsoever, were much more resistant to being punctured by certain types of sharp object, because there is nothing for a thorn for example to get caught by. If you think of the other extreme, knobbly tyres, you can see how thorns or nails would be more likely to become embedded as they would get caught by the front facing surface of the tread, but with a slick it's more likely to just skim off the smooth surface, almost impossible for a thorn to get purchase..

obviously some slicks have a little bit of tread, but I reckon those tyres are also going to be more prone to punctures than proper smooth slicks, also bike wheels don't need any tread whatsoever for water displacement because the footprint differs significantly from car tyres which need water displacement tread to avoid aquaplaning, so yeah, it makes sense, will try Kojaks.

This. I have about 1600 miles on a set of gp5ks including races, and I live in a major city. I’ve only gotten 2 punctures in that entire time period. They have lots of cuts in them but never get punctured. Idk why you would use anything else, they’re literally perfect.

I think it's obvious to everyone that puncture proof tires are not used for races, but are the obvious choice for bikes used as reliable, practical vehicles and for getting some cardio in without worrying about the risk of getting a puncture and having to fix a puncture while on the side of the road.

How do the gp5k compare to the Schwalbe Marathon Plus (regular or MTB) kind?

Marathon Plus is probably the best for avoiding flats, but they heavy as shit.
Marathon Almotion or Supreme are the nicest tires you can get that won't get flats but they're $65 each

About the same mileage on my set, the GP5k has just enough puncture protection to use as everyday tires. I had bad luck the first week with a puncture but since then I've only had 1 more and my streets are littered with glass and sharp metal garbage plus these are doing delivery duty the past 1.5months. I'm impressed by the GP5k really because on top of all that, they ride amazingly. My only gripe about them is how fast they wear out, I'm probably 1000 miles out from wearing these tires down to the TWI. With more durability focused tires, I'd get at least 5000 miles from a tire, these might see half that, maybe 3000 at most. They just don't last very long

I can change an inner tube in under 3 minutes, and that's for a rear wheel and included checking the tyre for the object that caused the puncture. I'm not boasting, that's how long it should take anyone whe's done it a few times before, I have a friend who changed and inflated a tube in under 2 minutes, although that was as front wheel.

So instead of crying about maybe perhaps having to fix a puncture and allowing that fear to influence your purchasing decisions why not just become proficient at changing a tube, all you need is a spare tube, a pair of latex gloves (if you are worried about getting your hands dirty), a pair of tyre levers and a pump, al of that will fit easily into a small bag and will weigh less than the excess weight that comes as standard with armour plated tyres listed above.

That way you can choose the tyres that improve your riding experience and not give a fuck about punctures, just change the tube and repair the puncture when you get a chance later.

I assume you are men right? I mean masculine male human beings who are able to work with their hands and not become emotionally distraught by minor inconveniences? If not forget about tyres and tubes and just neck yourself.

Weight isn't that much of as issue, as I could loose a couple kg of fat anyway.
There are even airless tires available, but the ones I saw would ride like a 3bar tire and I like to ride at 5 to 6 bar with less rolling resistance.

for my commuter/workhorse I use thick ass, cheap ass Kenda or Arisun tires. ride quality and grip are shit but those aren't priorities for city riding. zero punctures, last me the whole year, $10 a pop
for my road/touring bike, I get tires with a good balance between protection/grip/comfort. currently on vittoria zaffiro pro 32s, ticking all boxes so far. only punctures I've gotten were from riding through an awful dirt road, fully loaded, with low air pressure. nothing a good tire can do against a pinch flat.
