the fact it's full suspension adds at-least 4kg. Not getting very cheap suspension for casual use is probably the very first piece of basic advice you'd get on /n/.

You would though probably make it more bicycle-like and less car-like if you set the saddle height correctly.

Saddle is usually higher, I just left it down after I took off one of the mudguards, cheers though.

What do you mean about the suspension? Are you saying that the low quality of the suspension means the weight it adds is not worth it? That's interesting.

I should add now that this is a prebuilt bike

you seem to have an almost comedic lack of faith in the idea that an experienced cyclist could safely direct a bicycle that essentially maxes out at an equivalent speed to intense manual pedalling. If anything the lack of rider exertion makes it easier to be vigilant and responsive.

I reckon it must just be a manufacturing compromise to try and insure some longevity for the electronics, but IDK. No, it's just nightmarish nu-capitalism where products are as feature laden as humanly possible at a bizarrely low pricepoint, so that poor desperate people can be sold on a superficially high tech product.
Which in reality, is just a burden.

You bought a shit bicycle, and it's an e-bike too. It's not that e-bikes are not bicycles, it's that you didn't even buy a bicycle. You bought a bicycle shaped object (and it's an e-bike). You can buy those that aren't e-bikes too.

with throttle it rides like I imagine a jet-ski does, with a kind of disembodied buoyant propulsion.

With pedal assist on it rides like an RC car, kind of jerky and temperamental or bullish.

Because pedal assist cancels out the throttle and vice versa, I tend to use throttle on straights and flats, or for getting up hills or over crossings, pedalling manually on pavements and tighter corners and spaces.

It seems like too much mental work to efficiently integrate pedal assist into conventional cycling, hence my original point of "I thought I could ride this like a bike with an additional boost, but it's more like a hybrid moped/heavy manual bike"

Lithium requires proper load balancing of each cell with a well designed battery management system (BMS) or one of the cells could burst causing the other cells to burst in chain reaction. Now that's not a problem with a good BMS but that's the thing with cheap bikes powered by lithium, the BMS is one of the places manufacturers cheap out on.

That's the other thing, for a nice smooth pedal assist system, I believe some way to measure torque at the crank like a power meter is necessary to properly modulate acceleration for pedal assist.

$1200 is low for an ebike, you're strongly advised to avoid department store tier bikes, for example rei has an ebike for $1999 with a shimano motor and decent other specs, reputable bike brands like trek and cannondale have bikes starting at a bit below $3k. you could have gotten a trek domane al 2 bike for $999 and enjoyed the shit out of it.
