It's to make indoor training more interesting, when outdoor training is not a good option. It's gamifying the whole thing and gives you more a sense of competition and community.

I am fairly torn when it comes to trainers. In terms of providing an actual training experience, they work really well but the workout itself is so fucking boring and grueling. I lost interest in Zwift pretty fast. It's good during the winter where we have several week stretches here with nothing but rain

This is the practical one. It is for people with an existing road bike who dont want to ride outside in the winter.

the impractical one is the peloton where you have to buy a dedicated indoor bike.

Once the highs are down in the 60s bikes are basically over. Sometimes there'll be a couple extra weeks where I try to brave it out with more clothing and shit, but the simple unavoidable fact is just that cold fucking sucks. Getting up early enough in the afternoon to get a ride in before sunset quickly becomes impossible anyway.

It depends on the type of training, and also on the speed and wind. When you go "full ham", sure it's better to have those colder temperatures. If someone does an aerobic base training workout for 2-3 hours with a target heart rate of 140, they will get cold at a higher temperature.

sweaty-wet is actually worse. i hate riding in rain gear, all that perspiration under the plastic sheet with nowhere to go.
Of course i sweat in short-short as well, but i don't feel disgusting with the wind taking it all away.

Temperatures i'll ride anything from 5+°C (40F in burgerspeak), and a lazy drizzle won't stop me, but fuck riding through proper rain.

That's actually a huge disadvantage of indoor training. You basically need as big of a fan as possible to generate wind.

Another thing that came to mind with indoor training is less cleanup of your bike. In wet conditions, and especially when roads are salted, you need to clean your bike way more otherwise.

the gym I used to go to was for hardcore lifters so the clientele was not much more than /fit/cels and a couple of middle aged women. the big box gyms are full of fuckwits who are unsafe around any type of weights because they watched crossfit meme videos and thought it was a good idea, with cardio areas full of homos and middle aged women, and a basketball court owned by russians for some reason. younger women are mostly sitting around in bars gronking at each other. Even if you avoid all of those things, you can still consume the propaganda second-hand from other people.
