I'm fairly /fit/ and I've been occassionaly doing ~hour-ish long round trips by bike every week for a while now. Planning to be more adventurous and got a 5 hour roundtrip planned. Is this to much of a leap?

Biggest thing is make sure your fit is good and bring plenty of water and food. If you can comfortably ride for an hour you can probably do 5 hours, really just a question of whether or not you'll be comfy. riding for 1 hour only you can ignore minor issues with how your bike fits you, but they'll become real problems 5 hours in. I'd suggest doing 3 hours and seeing if you have anything hurts after the ride then going to 5

You could give it a try by choosing a route that'll take like 30 minutes and test out how many laps you can ride without getting too uncomfortable on your saddle. That way you don't have to ride too long after experiencing pain on your butt/hands.

In the 10 to 15km/h range, you are basically walking. As with walking, what will limit you is running out of food or your feetsie hurting. Here, for cycling, replace the feet with your ass.

Depends. Are you doing comfy street rides where a convenience store for snacks/water/electrolyte beverages is common, or biking in rugged terrain where you'll be doing a lot of uphill cycling?

Personally my butt was alright, but I was hurting in my legs the day after. Single speed cromoly sitting on 23x700c for 5,5 hours and barely managing 142km. The terrain wasn't all flats either, and absolutely cranking those hills were a massive pain.

Oh well, might not be hitting 200+ bpm on my hrm any time soon aye?

My back is severly underexercised so it's what starts killing me after four hours or so, long before my legs give out. If you have overall good health it shouldn't be an issue for you.

I do about 5 hours a day for work and let me tell you, the most important thing to sort out is your bike fit. Any kind of pain felt the first hour will be magnified for every hour in the saddle. Ultimately, it comes down to your pace. Is it going to be 5 hours of easy riding with plenty of refueling breaks or 5 hours of the pain train with as little recharge as possible?

Now how much of a leap is 1 hour to 5 hours? Not all that much surprisingly.

I don't understand why jump from 1h rides directly to 5h? Why not incrementally build up to it, say an hour at a time?
Personally, 2 hours into a ride I feel like I could go all day, 3 hours into the ride I am sore and beat.

i can get my dumpy ass to do 8-10 hrs for about 100 miles with the right wind and heat if i ride 50mi a couple days in advance. i ride hih gear so its max effort and minimal pedal rotations to save the knees a bit of trouble.

handlebar stance is key. dont be afraid to ride like a dork if it means you save some trouble on stress points on your body. and change how you dump your weight on the pedals in terms of conturting to get the power there. sometimes ill wrench against the handlebars or move my body side to side instead of the bike if it means i can squeeze extra energy out of different alignments of my bodies physiology. later stompers

No. It's mostly just doing the same activity for longer. Your biggest problems will likely be your ass getting sore or being dehydrated or not eating enough while riding. Obviously expect your average speed to be noticeably lower than it would be on a shorter trip.

I would argue 10 to 15 km/h would exarcerbate fit issues more than going faster since you woulsdn't be pushing on the pedals hard enough to take weight off the saddle.

can do 60 mi pretty easy and bounce back the next day and do some more vs low resistance and my knees are shot for a week. ive had a separated lcl for 5yrs and im fat. this is the only way i get it done. i ride almost everyday. no meds or wraps. ever. have you done both yet or are you just pretending like you know?

When I wanted to see if I can cycle 100km I planned a route along cities with busy train service (no problem in my country) and went with the knowledge that I can catch a train basically anywhere in 30 minute intervals.

I ended up doing 153km and had energy for more but caught a puncture and lost interest. Up to that point I've only done 70ish
