if you're on the big ring, it just drops off, easy
if you're on the little ring, moving the derailer will push it over into the teeth directly horizontally to the left on the big ring.
if the chain meshes with those teeth, it'll get picked up and moved onto the big ring. Why wouldn't it mesh?
You'd be surprised how good big shifts are too. I've got a 44-22 double on one bike and it's smooth as hell.
Just needs a friction shifter to take it a little slow and kinda feel it in a little or you'd probably drop chains.
