I'm looking for something that's "better than walking" that A. Costs less than $300, B. Isn't unusable on inclines or uneven sidewalks, and C. Can easily be put in a sedan's trunk.
Would an adult skateboard or scooter fit the bill?

Skateboard can be hard to steer but has a coolness factor to it (choose a longboard).
A scooter has better handling but you look like a dork on top of one.

Another option are roller skates who sadly have generally disappeared.

You should buy things based on what you think they are worth
A bike to me is worth no more than $600 so I don't spend any more than that. Even though I have enough in savings to buy about 10 highest end carbon road bikes right now if I really wanted to.

Then you are just a lifestyle or casual cyclist, which is great.

Someone who puts thousands of miles down will want more. Part of what n does well is pointing out good improvements vs meme improvements in these higher end bikes.

I hate the rampant consoomerism that now infests cycling.
Riding bikes should just be about having fun.
With the money I have I could easily afford to spend 20x more and buy a high end carbon bike. But will it make me 20x a better cyclist? No. Will it be 20x more durable? No. Will it let me have 20x more fun? No. So I see no point.

Consoomers always make sweeping assertions like "someone who puts thousands of miles down will want more", "everyone wants to buy the best they can afford".
If I ever post about being happy with a low end bike and don't prove that I could easily buy a more expensive one if I wanted to then every time the responses are "lol you're just a coping poorfag" "seething you can't afford more?" "lol you must be poor af nobody buys a bike that cheap if they could afford better".

Notice that since I pre-emptively dismissed all the consoomertard cope they have no response, going on for 15+ hours now.
