I need to put together an ebike on the cheap.
Have kits gotten any better in the last five years?

My sense is that the market those for kits has largely disappeared since these days if you want a cheap garbage e-bike you can just buy a complete one off Amazon for less than it would cost to piece on together on your own. And if you want something that's not garbage, pretty much all the big bike companies have decent ones in their catalogs now.

yes, they are now called "used e-bikes" and they come with the bikes already

early 2020 was the best time to build an ebike since then because of covid supply chain disruptions good motors and batteries have actually gone up in price if you can get them

same with the actually good highend e-bikes, the market is just currently flooded with garbage

dont expect it to get any better any time soon. cant even buy 29 inch tires or tubes (wholesale) at the moment
