Why do certain countries cuck themeselves by selecting different track gauge? How did they solve it rather than moving shit between rolling stock at the border?

Early on they were standardized locally. Compare your map to a map of the Russian Empire/Soviet Union or British Africa. Standardization between different countries didn't really occur until after WWI. By that point it didn't make sense to completely rip out existing railways for a lot of places.

How many of those countries in South America and Africa even have rail links to their neighbors? There aren't many trains going from Guatemala City to Veracruz or Kinshasa to Dar es Salaam; I don't think most of central America even has functioning railways (in any gauge) anymore now that the big banana plantations use trucks. The Soviet bloc is intentionally that way because they didn't want trains full of krauts with Sturmgewehrs coming into their country. Spain and Portugal are just being slow to catch up to the rest of Europe; their HSR networks are already standard gauge.

Not sure what went wrong with India, New Zealand, and Ireland or how Australia avoided it - you'd think the Bongs would've used standard gauge there so they could ship train parts over from England.

I'm pretty sure the Cape to Cairo was supposed to be standard gauge, which would've solved this problem in most of Africa, but the Bongs never got around to building it.

It's not that hard to do. Every railroad in the American South was converted from broad gauge to standard gauge in the span of two days in 1886.

Ireland was an early adopter of rail, and when they started different companies used different gauge, as in Great Britain. At some point the most widely adopted gauge became the legal standard in Ireland, as had happend on Great Britain. I'm guessing the same happened in the colonies. Being an early adopter means you get a lot of porblems that get hammered out in the first few decades, but you also get a lot of track laid, funded by early investors who will never see their money back. So Britain has I belive more tracks running to places where no government or established company would lay rail.

Fair enough, I suppose in the case of Ireland it won't matter anyway until somebody builds picrel or they try build HSR from Dublin to Belfast, i.e. never. Same goes for Kiwiland.

It's a lot cheaper to buy standard equipment from the European market than to make your own custom model. Same reason Spain finally abandoned meme gauge railways when they built their HSR. There's no technical problem with it.

Meme. Russians adopted broad gauge during the empire. It was because some engineers felt that wider gauge allowed for more powerful locomotives that could safely pull heavier loads at higher speeds. After they figured out that wider gauges had no apparent advantages over narrower gauges, they persisted with it because that's what they were already building,

Honestly, why would those countries standardize internationally? It's not massively expensive to build domestic trains, they can use ports for shipping freight, and most of these places don't see significant overland routes for passenger lines. If you're Russia, most your trading partners are former Soviet countries, which are all on same or similar track gauge.

I doubt Rwanda or Zimbabwe have the ability to build locomotives of any gauge domestically - they're mostly stuck repairing what they have left from the colonial era or buying customized ones abroad. Being able to buy secondhand locomotives on the international market without modification would be an enormous boon to them, and their underdeveloped rail systems would make re-gauging relatively cheap. Sadly foreign aid will never go to projects that would actually improve those countries in the long run.

India and Russia are admittedly unlikely to re-gauge anytime soon for the reasons you listed.

As a Guatemalan myself I can confirm you are right. All trains have stopped running decades ago. The old main station in Guatemala city became a museum pic related.

The only future transportation proyects in the country are one that would connect Mexico and Guatemala with one cargo train route and other in Guatemala City for a tram.

They'll spend most their effort on the former, simply due to finances. There isn't significant rail traffic to justify the expense of re-gauging. IF (big if), they decide to, it will be with respect to neighboring African countries, rather than into an international standard.

This assumes that there would be enough rail traffic to justify the expense of re-gauging. Sure, it's cheaper to do sooner, rather than later, but if the operational costs NOT to do so are only the expense of a few maintenance employees' salaries per year, it still is hard to justify. If they can extend the life cycle of their current infrastructure, that will always be a better option when looking 5 to 10 years into the future. That mid-term thinking is what will win out over a truly sensible international standard which would benefit their region in 20+ years.

A lot of the time there's no point.
Southern Africa all runs on Cape Gauge, East Africa on metre gauge, etc.
If you need to move bulky things further than that, e.g. to another African region, it's often much cheaper to just take it to a port and ship it instead.

The Russian Empire chose 1526 mm gauge specifically not to let Germans use their tracks should they invade. Now any train going there need to change it's bogies. Maybe the Spanish had the same idea after the Napoleonic Wars.

maybe the cheapest way would be to do some in river management
while also paying close attention to the water catchment as forestry is in direct opposition to the usability of rivers

I can't take this, bros. People literally have to change trains or wait several hours for train wheels to be regauged on border with standard gage countries. It is literally slowing down the economy and trade with developed part of the continent.

Almost always standard gauge, though they did build a cape gauge line in the '80s. Easier to sell them Chinese equipment that way and the leftover equipment from the European colonial era is falling apart anyway.

I see what you’re saying but I think you’re misunderstanding the purpose of them a bit. The point is usually to convey a broad, general sense of an overall trend, not to present information about any one particular time. I do agree they should have better indications of time passing though, just like a bar filling up or something.
