Parking spaces can get really expensibe and take too much urban space. It's just a waste of space.
Wouldn't it be a good solution to incentivize the use of underground parking on large developments? Why isn't this more common?

Isn't it more costly to build up by making parking lot buildings? There would also be much more parking space by building several levels underground wich is more pragmatic. It is even better for the cars because they wouldn't be exposed to the elements.

Build public parking decks. Have a general public short term area. And a more secure long term area. Build sports fields, dog parks, pools, or general parks on top.

Ban street parking. Reclaim street space for protected bike lanes and trees. Large truck deliveries and pick ups only during night off peak hours.

Everyone wins but communist bugs.

Subfloors in skyscrapers are mostly full of ancillary and mechanical services for the building, so the parking is usually limited. As you excavate further down, the price starts to rise at an exponential rate. Parking ends up being either outrageously expensive or entirely reserved for executives/company use to begin with. They are not very comparable to the big multi-story decks you see above ground (obviously, exceptions exist).

No 100 floor building is wasting basement floors on car storage. Get the fuck out of here.

If you absolutely must have parking it should go on floors 3-10. Floors 1-2 are reserved for retail. You can actually see this in a lot of highrise designs if you just look at buildings built in the last few decades. Basement parking is almost always just a huge waste of resources unless the basement just needs to be there and would otherwise be underutilized space.

You know we have parking lots in Europe too right. I just got back back visiting Landshut, which is a medieval town, and even there they have a big lot.
Underground parking is actually a thing in Finland, at least that's what my friend there showed me.

No, parking should not be incentivized, period. There should be no minimums, only maximums. If a developer doesn't want to include parking, they shouldn't have to. Underground garages are complex and costly. Basement floors are already often filled with tons of mechanical and storage so the remaining space is limited. Not every skyscraper has a massive footprint, so they'd have to build deeper because each garage floor would be small. Then you need space for the ramps, plus fire system, plus more ventilation, plus entry system, security...

Street parking is totally a waste of space that could be used for bike lanes, bus lanes, wider sidewalks etc. but city governments don’t want to build lots on their dime, so the simple answer is to require the development companies building new buildings to build parking with their buildings. Everyone wins, the people and businesses get the parking they need, it costs the taxpayers nothing and just skims a little off the development corporations’ bottom line. The fact that people want to get rid of this is insane.

Park cars on ground level. But build elevated platform for pedestrians above. Cars infrastructure is expensive. But platform that only need to suppory pedestrian weight is much less. Multiple level cities is the answer.
