It was a fun job until the 80s when safety/anti-drug/anti-alcohol culture took over. Now, given the horseshit you have to put up with and the time you're away from home, it's not worth it. And the one-man crew shit is always hanging over your head on top of that.

Yes it literally does suck, imagine drinking or getting high with the rear brakeman in the caboose just watching the world go by. Pilots had the same culture too

It takes 5 years at minimum to get enough seniority to not being in the yard or the bitch extraboard. When working thr road you're away from home 36 to 60 hours at a time. More if there is a mainline derailment.

The only good thing is when your working as a conductor on the road and you have the perfect round trip. Where it was 4 to 5 hours across, 10 hours at the motel, 4 hours back to home, and 20 hours at home. All day loght trips and night sleeping. You get home rested and have day light still to have a life.

The worst is when your on the graveyard trips. Work all night long on trains with set outs and pick ups. 16 hours at the motel and then called to keep you from getting held away pay. So you sir in the depot for 3 hours. Then you get home and your turn is going to get called off rest. So you have only 10 hours to sleep and take care of essentials.

I passed up an easy job as a software contractor at an army base, and a job with the tsa in Alaska. I was hoping to be a long pool/pull conductor in 5 years and then retire on that board. But now I'll have to take engine service and be stuck in nowhere till I retire.

They're cutting yardmasters too. Though no yardmaster, no remote zones.

There is 1 remote yard left in my territory. And like a dozen people more senior that want to be yard mast there but aren't

I would go to the darkside and be a field manager. But then I'm vulnerable to being forced around nationally

Same with tugboats/sailors. Old timers would tell me stories about loading on food, of course, and weed and beer before heading down the coast. Imagine chilling after watch, sun set over the continent, sipping an ice-cold bohemian-style beer. Feel like a free man. If you're a yardmaster, and actually good at your job, you can get a job with any railroad in the country in a management position. Yeah, they're cutting yards like crazy and have doubled my workload, but it's better to take those cuts now and have a job than wait 3 years and have half the conductor positions abolished when they cut them off road trains.

They're cutting managers. There is one MOP now where there was 6 a couple years ago. Soon none. As they'll do it remotely from Omaha.

Senior mtos already float around 3 or more terminals now.

1 myo per shift and if one goes on vacation or put sick. The others have to work those shifts instead of being off.

Tried to apply for a shortline conductor,Didn't get it it due to seniority but they did really want me in due to my prior military,the lady even told me that when they called,Sadly they had no other positions to offer me currently.
