looks like the perfect job for me. better pay, not having to deal with customers, cozy job

Thinking of applying for it, but I just wanted to see if anyone else does this and would be willing to answer some questions about it

Same requirements as any other railroad job: good driving record, clean arrest record, good credit, can pass a 90 day hair drug test. Military & machinery experience helps.

would having a mental health history disqualify me? I've had depression for a long time and my current job in insurance is severely exacerbating it, mostly from social overload. I'm probably schizoid too (not related to schizophrenia, just means I'm a super-loner)

No, go ahead and get your application in, the posting won't stay up long. If it comes time to attend a hiring session/interview before your 90s days are up, call/email them and say you're not longer interested. If you show up and don't submit to the drug test (or fail it) they blacklist you and supposedly you go on a DOT watch list as well (not sure how true that is, that's what I was told when I hired on). Just be very sure about the date you had the brownie or whatever is over 90 days when it gets close. Chances are the hiring process will take at least a couple of months.

Btw, they're hot and heavy on drug use because of FRA mandates. They actually have to do random piss tests. If you can't live without weed, it's not the job for you. Tons of alcoholics though.

it's literally the only time I've had pot. only tried it as a novelty. my current job doesn't test at all. I'm basically a teetotaler besides that.

okay for mental health, I just saw they required an extensive physical and was wondering if they are as stringent about that stuff as other industries are, especially since this is so safety related.

No the physical is just getting put on a machine that measures your strength and range of motion, (I forget what it's called), but it just tests how well your arms and legs work. You don't have to be a brute to successfully pass it, but if you have a preexisting injury or condition that would limit your range/strength, they'll probably find it with that thing and it will likely disqualify you.
