There is a sensible middle ground, for people who are not sustaining constant high power output, and it's the kind of riding position favoured by classical cycle tourists. Drop bars, at or slightly below saddle height.

That neck crank to look over the bars is what kills me (not really, looking at the traffic ahead is very important!). If I never had to look up, I'd always ride in that aero position. On a road bike? You should feel stretched out, not compressed. Flat bar bikes might not give you enough reach to get aero comfortably. Anyway, don't hunch over, roll your hips forward like your sticking your ass out behind you to keep your back straight.
