I would go for a normal bike type like in the video link you posted. cheaper and easier to maintain and you can ride alone.
USA has lots of cool tracks to ride. ofcourse the width of the rail is important to know if you want to build something to ride rails. make sure the track is abandoned. watch out where you ride. keep a good eye on the track for stones and branches and other dangers.
