What I learned:
Either buy a good used bike (true wheels, well looked after) and lube all hubs and chain, upgrade tires, tubes, possibly replace worn brake pads, chains or cassettes. Spend less than 500. If you look for deals you can spend less than 200-300.
Or save up to 3k+ to buy a premium new bike. Everything in between is more compromise and not worth it.

It's informed by reality not shills. A well looked after used bike with round wheels, fast tires, clean/lubed drivetrain/hubs is performing very well and gives you a lot of street cred. Upgrading is worth it if you can afford to go full mafia.

I keep[ saying this amd I won't stop saying it, spend as much as you can reasonably afford on a good example of a rigid steel 90's mtb with DX or XT groupset, those bikes were overbuilt to fuck in the durability department, light as fuck for a steel bike and the geometry is basically the model all the multinational plastic dogshit sellers have been copying ever since. The feel of a quality steel frame in second to none, the best ones are as light as anyone needs without being fragile and they are easy to maintain.

$4-500 will get you a bike that will shit all over pretty much anything new from the $1k-$2k price point and that will last you for years. picrel cost me $360.

But you can shave weight off by making a few small changes, I built picrel up for a net spend of about $150, the original bike weighed just over 13kg, but I sold off the original stem, bars, seatpost and saddle, wheelset and tyres (which all went for much more than I paid for the bike by the way due to them being hard to come by for those who need them, and more than covered the purchase of lighter replacement parts)

The bike now weighs 11.75 kg. Sure, it's a Tange ultimate ultralight frame which is one of the lightest steel frames you can get, but it's still steel as are the forks, everything else is post/bars/stem are based on ritchey logic steel tubing, again silly light and super strong and the groupset is much better than anything you could buy now for under $1500

all that will do is exclude the poorly listed bikes which might be the best deals, and the custom/rare bikes which might be the best bikes

You don't even have to know specifically what you're looking for, infact it's bad to. Just give interest to things in your size, that you like the look of, with higher end groupsets or tubing. Then research that specific bike you've found.

I have 7 meme tier steel bikes and i'd never even heard of the brand of all but 2 of them when I first saw each one.

the components were overbuilt, because mountain biking was still a new but rapidly growing phenomenon there was fierce competition and a lot of innovation going on in order to capture as much of the market as possible, those old DX and XT groupsets were overbuilt, they used way less plastic than they could have, the engineering was much better than it needed to be, there's a reason why they are still going strong 30-40 years later.

The frames were not overbuilt, they took already advanced road bike frame tech and just looked to make it comfier and more robust, again that's why so many frames are still around today despite decades of punishment.

Same thing for the purposes of this discussion, they made them better than they needed to be, still pretty light but the focus was on durability and they ended up being stupidly durable, 40 years durable ffs, anyone who's worked with these old parts and newer equivalents knows this, the newer ones are flimsy and plasticy by comparison, they may 'behave' better over the short term, but their life span is very severely limited, and deliberately so, built to fail and to need replacing.

I repair bikes for a living, i work with old and new bikes alike, but with older bikes it tends to be gear and brake adjustment, servicing BB and hubs and whatnot, basically maintenance, whereas newer stuff breaks a lot more, especially once it gets to about 3 or 4 years old, or as I measure it - to the third set of tyres.

Of course higher end stuff is better, you get what you pay for holds true for bike parts, and you'll note that I'm specifically referring to DX and XT components from the late 1980's through to the mid 1990's, not XTR from the same era which was on the whole even better, but priced accordingly.

So to compare like for like, parts from the upper mid range, then there is no comparison if we're going to talk about build quality, durability, overall functionality and ease of maintenance, the older stuff wins on every metric you can think of hands down, the only metric it may struggle with is early life behaviour, and by that I'm referring to the crispness and smoothness of operation which is noticeably better in newer parts out of the box, but take those same parts and compare them after a few thousand miles and the older stuff still feels and functions like it did on day one, the newer stuff is nothing like as good as it was day one.

Agreed, and there was the BMX boom of the 70s and 80s too, it's like all these things came together and culminated in a brief period of creative ingenuity and innovation, the mtb scene owes much toi the road bike scene, that is beyond doubt but the point being made here is that the 90s mtb scene seems to represent a kind of zenith, a heyday that has not been surpassed since.
With the exception of frame geometry, and that only really affects very specialized 'one trick pony' bikes, everything else has either stagnated or deteriorated, and nowhere is that more obvious than with the quality of bike components.

I use online listings, all the usual places that sell second hand shit, filter by your area and search for things like 'bike', 'mans bike', 'used bike', 'mountain bike' etc - these are going to throw up a lot of BSO shite, but occasionally there will be a diamond in the rough, someone who doesn't know what they have, people who are clearing out dads shed and just want the bike gone, bargains are ut there.

You can search local bike shops too but you'll need to have some kind of retarded bike shop owners who don't know what they have or what it's worth, charity shops can be a good source, but even those are getting their shit together now and tend to have experts that advise them on the value of items like bikes.

It's getting harder but that just makes it more fun and satisfying when a bargain crops up.

Get a nice clean non-abused 1990's mtb and you will have a bike for life that you can adapt to fit pretty much any role.
