Are mandatory child helmet laws killing cycling and promoting obesity?

I rarely see any kids cycling where I live in the suburbs. Sure, most of them are busy looking at screens. But are the helmet laws keeping them on the couch?

I haven't given it much thought but I'm looking at a Europe map right now and I can't say I've ever noticed any correlation between mandatory child helmet laws (Spain, France, Sweden, Czechia, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Latvia) and bicycle usage.

There are plenty of other things making kids obese, namely shit food and a culture of laziness that pushes the notion that there is a "race" of fat people and that therefore being anti-fat is racist.

Mandatory helmet laws are a symptom of the same problem - that major public health and safety issues are totally outside of any reasonable person's control, and that therefore the best solution is to mandate foam hats instead of holding drivers accountable for the outcome when they run over someone.

Yes in the way that helmets are proven to discourage cycling by making it appear dangerous and also decreasing passes distances.

In HS I had to go everywhere on an old steel Quintana Roo tri/road bike, parents said I was too old for rides and could either take the bus or bike. After a year I was so fucking jacked and people always saw me around town looking graceful and dreamy af I was riding it to girl’s houses most of the time. My kid will have a bike, helmets or no.

Well it's happened to me, and that's how I learned you should always carry a patch kit and a pump.
When I was 10 I also went OTB, did half a somersault and hit the back of my head in the pavement. I was glad for wearing a helmet that time.

No. I grew up in a city with mandatory helmets, literally everyone there rode bikes. I currently live in a city without mandatory helmets and it's for weirdos.

The big thing for me growing up is when we were like 11-12 we had a mandatory part of the curriculum where we had to learn road cycling etiquette and everyone learned cycling basics, although only like 1 or 2 in the class couldn't ride already
