overhead lines are an eyesore in cities and batteries are expensive, heavy and pointless for a vehicle traveling on fixed tracks anyway

A lot of places got away from that because there were too many stray cats, drunks, and children that would step on the third rail accidentally. Made for a mess and delayed the trams with all that roadkill.

Underground conduit power worked fine in Manhattan, Washington D,C., and London. It’s expensive to install and maintain but worked well from the Victorian to the atomic age. Modern systems have a center third rail that is only activated when the tram is above it.
