I have a rivet master link, a chain tool, and a chain.

It depends on what type of link you have. Post a pic.

a general tip though, I don't do this, but it will make it easier for you, is to get some thin wire and make a loop a few links down on both ends of the chain, to hold the chain together. So you're only having to worry about joining it, and not holding the ends together.

The key is the instructions. I've read this like 5x and I don't quite get what they're saying. Also I'm pretty sure the tool is a chain breaker. Do I even have the right tool?

That link is meant ofr single speed chains, usually.

You slide it into the chain, bend it forward and slide the plate over the two pin nothces.

unless you lose the locking ring, in which case you have a small clicp that is supposed to keep it in place.

Honestly you should just go and buy a whole new chain so you can be sure your quick link matches your use case.

The chain tool is necessery to re-size the chain, if you're installing a new one.
I would guess for installing that link, it goes together in the way you can obviously just see it would. My only question is, does that outer plate even require any force/tool to be driven on? Maybe not? maybe pliers? I can see how you'd drive it on with the chain tool too. Just think about it.

That might explain some things? This is all so confufsing. I'm 35 but I've never been able to ever replace or repair a chain and all the guides just confuse me.

One of the original links broke? The chain will probably be too short now to use correctly. Even if you reconnect it shifting to certain gears (i.e. big ring front and back) could damage your derailleur. Best to replace it, especially since it's rusty. SRAM ones are cheap on amazon and have a type of quicklink that's easy to install without tools. You'll still need the chain tool you bought to size it correctly first though.

It's talking about a 'connecting pin', which is a fundamentally different way to put together a chain than a quicklink. Looks like that's not what you have.

You're missing the retainer clip, you don't need the chain breaker tool for this type of chain disconnect, just pliers. Make sure place the open end of the clip opposite from the direction of movement. Pretty old style of master link but still seen on budget 1/8" singlespeed chains

Y’all are fools, two piece master links are pretty normal (just look at cheapie KMC single speed chains). They don’t use a retainer clip only chain tension to hold on the outer plate.

Depends which KMC, most use the better 2 piece design but the cheapest of their lineup do come with the retaining clip kind. No real reason to use a retaining clip master link when the 2 piece is better in every way
