those rusty wheels might be ok. Rusty spokes are ok. They do say it's a cheap wheel though. Try overhaul the hubs, just clean and put new ball bearings and grease in if the cups/cones are not pitted.

The wheels are fucked. The front is some trash generic joy tech schwinn and the spokes were galvanized, so they are rusted out. The rear is a Shimano hub and weimann rim, so it’ll go in the orphan rim pile. I just bolt cut the spokes of the front, and disassembled it. Both hubs are crunchy as fuck too. I rebuilt the front, without replacing the bearings, and it’s better. It’s a garbage hub, so not worth putting new balls in it.

those bar end shifters work on drop bars like this
you would just need some new standalone brake levers, like SRAM S500, TRP RRL or BL-R400

The other thing you might do, is remove your larger front chainring, and not have a front derailer or front shifter. You'd just need shorter chainring bolts and to take all the other stuff off. That would simplify the bike some.

But why would you want to? You're just eating up your tire clearance. Good 26" tires exist. If you want to run narrow tires this is the wrong project.

Unless you actually ride on washboarded gravel or cobblestones often, I would suggest you buy the FX 4 disc, the rigid fork version, because the spec is otherwise the same, but it weighs 1kg less without the fork, it's $200 cheaper, and if you're riding on roads with the suspension fork locked out, the rigid fork will actually give a smoother ride. Plus it will just be more fun/ nimble feeling.

To actually answer your question though, at the 500-1500 price point, the important pieces of spec are that brakes go from being bad mech discs, to good mech discs, to cheap hydraulic, to better hydraulic, every step of which makes maintenance a lot easier, modulation better, and less bullshit like brake squeel. The other thing you get in that price range is suspension forks go from being coil, to air, which are better, and rigid forks go from being aluminium or high tensile steel to chromoly steel or carbon, which give a much smoother ride. Your wheel and tyre spec will improve, which is a major part of ride quality, and for wheels, long term durability of a bicycle. Drivetrain spec improves, which just means things get incrimentally smoother and more reliable, and at a certain point that tapers off and they get lighter and slightly nicer to use. Weight generally drops. You can get through axles which make a difference. Or tubeless. Bike spec is complicated. You can't really tldr it beyond what is kind of obvious like things get lighter and more reliable and work better up to a point, and there are a lot of opinions too.

Italian frames are basically just the best.
The only meme standard they use is there's an italian bottom bracket, but italian bikes are so prominent that shimano and many others make bottom brackets for that standard. Headset also, possibly, so it's better to buy a bike frame with a headset (and with a seatpost).

You can easily tell the quality of a steel frame by googling the tubeset and seeing where it fits in the hierachy.
All columbus frames are nice enough for this, but aelle or tretubi is cheaper stuff and SL/ SLX is better.
653/853/953 are all really high end tubesets
531, true temper, tange, range from quite good to excellent all.
oria tubign is all good.

then just it's in your size and you like the paint, and ideally, it comes with a headset

Shifters+brakes won't work at all. Ultegra drop bar levers are like $300 new. 105 levers would work and be a little cheaper but they're also known for being defective and dying quickly.

Other than that the obvious stuff is ok - brakes are the correct mounting type, front derailleur will be braze on. Could be other stuff though, idk. For example some frames need brakes with longer arms to reach the rim and the ones you have might not work. No idea if it'd be an issue here.

No, what's 'brazed on' is the little tab on the frame above the bottom bracket that you attach the derailleur to. It's still just a bolt.

You took a pic of the wrong side of the bike, but just going off the crank arm I think it has ultegra 6700 components (there should be part numbers stamped on the crankset and derailleurs somewhere probably). If that's right, ST-6700 are the matching shifters. Any of the other models in the pic in >>1709988 are officially compatible too though, if you prefer them. Other than that I'm sure there are some offbrand shifters out there that will work but I have no idea about that.

I've been thinking of getting a wilier montegrappa frame from Merlin to do a similar thing, component swap but from a questionable Chinese frame and I've been upgrading all the components little by little. Shits only $414 and they had all sizes last time I checked. Basic alum frame/carbon fork rebrand but at least a name brand rebrand so you know slightly better QC.

i agree with the FX 4 disc recommendation, the FX 3 disc would be fine as well imo. the carbon fork has a smoother ride quality and the bike will be so fast and efficient that you won't feel the need to take offroad "shortcuts".

So I have a old Diamondback Fleet Streak I use for my commutes and its a 2x6 drivetrain

I really only keep it on the larger gear out of the two front gears but the old shifter keeps shifting it back.

Without the derailleur there there's a better chance the chain falls off. 1x chainrings are designed specially to hold the chain better or something.

Simplest thing is to use the limit screws to lock the derailleur in place. There will be two side-by-side screws on the derailleur, possibly with "H" and "L" written next to them. One controls how far the derailleur can physically move inward and the other how far it can move outward. Normally they're for safety and to keep the chain from falling off, but if you get the derailleur where you want it then screw them both all the way in then it'll stay there forever no matter what the cable or shifter is doing.

Even level new gravel bike, pic rel, is $1700 and weighs 10.26kg

If you say a used bike is worth half a new bike, just inherently, to give a fair comparison, how much rigid 90s mtb does $850 get you? A lot. That would buy you absolutely top of the line and high end parts to fix it up. They could weigh the same for one, infact, the old mtb could weigh less.

Coincidently enough I bought a Univega a few months ago at thrift store, because it had neat gumwall slicks. I took the slicks off it as well as the wheels, cause the wheels had Araya 7x rims, and I slapped some crappy joy tech wheels on it,, and doubled my $ on the flip (though I did put a few hours into a full tune up).
The thinner Arya 7x rims are what I’m gonna put on the grabel build, thou I think I want nicer hubs

depends on how you ride it
If it's rough ground you will drop chains without narrow wide or a chain keeper or a derailer there
but if it's mostly smooth cruising, or, you pedal through rough stuff, chain retention with nothing is good enough in my experience.

The other thing to consider is, can you increase the tension on the shifter? So it holds in place?

Hanger is this one I think. Shows up when you search both Schwinn and Trek, so you can't conclude anything about frame quality.

An undamaged metal frame has to be really fucking shitty to actually be dangerous - like "$59 at walmart" shitty. Just make sure the welds look like they were done by someone with working eyes and that nothing's dented or bent or cracked.

they are way more efficient on roads than anything else

You want an endurance road bike. That means it has higher handlebars compared to a race bike, and fits wider tires. 32mm is standard, when race bikes have 25-28mm. That makes them comfy versions of road bikes, but still fast.
Road bikes now also have much wider gearing than they used to. 34-34 climbing gears are standard. That's a 1-1 ratio. It's enough to climb steep hills easily.
Basically look for something with a carbon/composite fork, and 8/9 speed claris or sora. Like pic related would be good.

I like e-bikes but I don't think 1200 is enough to get a good one. So I wouldn't suggest it.

pretty much all bike frames are aluminium, some good ones too. But an aluminium fork means a relatively harsh riding bike and is a general red flag. It makes a real difference.
Maybe not a deal breaker if the bike is otherwise solid.

Hey anons, the clamp on my seat post is fucked and the post itself is scratched and ugly. 25.4 is a common vintage size. it's possible that the damage to the seatpost was causing it to slip, or the clamp was overtightened at some point, which stretched the seat tube out a little, or it's a 25.4 seat post in a frame meant to take 26.2 or something. any of those situations could be fixed with a soda can shim. try checking the seat post size database on sheldon brown. if that doesn't help, get calipers and measure the inside of the seat tube.

Measuring the frame with calipers isn't that accurate
it's accurate for measuring the post, but not the hole of the frame so much. But that is a way.

you could also go to a shop which either has a bin of old seatposts in many sizes, or has a seatpost measuring rod like pic rel.
A shop that deals in such things is also a good place to ask for advice about the frame potentially being bent open or closed to fit the wrong size, and bending it back.

I bought that bike (well, 2020 AR3) as my first road bike and it's served me quite well. It has room for 38mm tires so I picked up a second set of wheels to go grabbeling and just swap them out based on the type of ride. It's a good blend of both capabilities
My only regret is not going for the AR1 as I've been riding a lot more than previously after I bought this bike, but it's plenty capable in poverty specs - 2020 AR3 was shimano sora.

(For road) If I'm gonna give in, do I NEED hydro disc? Or can I get away with spyres or HY/RD or something? All the decent aluminum frames I want seem to only be available in disc now. A big advantage of hydraulic discs on higher end road bikes, in my opinion, is the fucked cable routing. Hoses can make it through all these crazy bends that are becoming increasingly common for internal routing but it doesn't affect the brake's feel like it might on a cable-actuated brake.
But like you said, using a cable-actuated brake gives you more freedom to mix and match lever and calipers. As for mounting the flat-mount brakes, it depends which caliper model you're using and what size rotor. To save myself from confusion, I'll try to use the same brand adapter as the caliper.
As for centerlock vs 6-bolt, I usually don't care unless there's a specific hub/wheel I want that only comes in one of the varieties. So get your wheel situation sorted first and buy rotors accordingly.

Renting sounds like it'd just be more expensive in the long run even if that is a thing. If you don't want it afterward you can probably flip it on craigslist for 80% of the original price.

thanks for all the info, so it sounds like with conventional routing cable disc isn't so bad. For caliper mounting it sounds like each manufacturer will have an adapter for the caliper and for a specific size rotor? It seems like all the cheaper wheels and hubs use 6 bolt so I might just go with that.

If you just buy a nice old road bike, fix it up some, get expensive tires, get clipless pedals, and bolt on some aerobars, you'll honestly be fairly competitive. It's pretty easy with an old bike to route your shifters onto the aerobars too. Or to switch to a basebar/pursuit bar for a more legit front end.

Flat mount adapters are standard size, only matters (on the front) which way it is facing so it can be a 140mm or 160mm adapter. On the rear you only need the adapter if you use bigger than 140mm.
On mine I use 160mm front and rear, on the front I use the adapter that came with my Hy Roads, on the rear I use the old adapter, fits just the same.

They have become interchangeable because plenty of people used them that way without knowing what they are talking about. Alloy = mix of metals. You probably won’t get many bike components made out of pure aluminium, there is always something mixed into it to reach better overall properties in the resulting alloy.

What happens if I go two teeth over the total teeth limit of my rear derailleur? I'm already at the maximum of 45, but my biggest sprocket is 34 even though my derailleur can take up to 36. So if I replace my cassette for one with a 36 will I be OK as long as I avoid the big chainring/big sprocket combination altogether in order to not strain the tensioner spring of the derailleur too much?

Typically if you're putting a cassette with a larger big cog on a bike you want to double check that it can still shift into big/big without the drivetrain jamming. If you had only a tiny bit of slack before you may need another link or two, but probably not. Just a good idea to check it. Small/small rubbing is fine and I've set customers bikes up like that before and told them just not to cross chain that way. Big/big is a valid combination to use depending on your q factor, especially if you're running a dual range type setup with a much smaller inner chainring. If someone accidentally shifts into big/big and their chain isn't long enough it can jam as the derailer hits the limit and it can trash the drivetrain and maybe even cause a crash, so you want to always make sure when changing out cassette or chainring sizes that big/big somewhat works. I think Sheldon has an article on this

What’s the general opinion on night riding and what’s your go-to lighting system?

I love night riding, and at this time of year it basically becomes necessary as we lose daylight in the northern hemisphere. When riding trails I run an 1100 lumen Cygolite metro on the bars and an 850 lumen expelion on my helmet with a bontrager flare rear light on my seat post for occasional road transits.

For bike paths I use the metro on the bars with a light and motion vis 360 on my helmet. The vis 360 is a fantastic light that I really recommend. It lets you spotlight anything you want and has a built in rear helmet light with side lights as well.

For road riding it’s the cygolite/vis 360/flare on solid and a Garmin Varia rear radar unit. Make fun all you want of my “lit up like a Christmas tree” setup…I don’t want to die because some cagey doesn’t see me.

you should still set it up with enough chain length to not explode in that combo
the 'max capacity' refers to the fact that it won't wrap small+small so the chain will drag backwards over the cage. It's a total nonissue imo. You likely won't even have that by exceeding the capacity by a small amount anyway.

Two of my bikes run SON hubs and B&M lights. One of them supplements the dynamo lights with battery-powered lights on the rack and on the stem mounted where the reflector used to go. The Linus-branded front battery powered light is weak though, I want to replace it with something that looks the same but provides useful light. I also have some Light & Motion USB rubber band lights that I take along on any ride where there's even the shadow of a chance I'll be out after dark.

I commuted by bike for about ten years, and while I was pretty fast, I was never FUCKING FAST. Are there any training regimens or anything that'll make me faster?

Currently riding a 1x10 road bike (42t in the front) on 28c, and also have a 42x17 fixie. I put in about 12-20 miles a day on exercise rides. I check my old strava segments from 2012 and I used to be a hell of a lot faster.

What's people's preferred clothing setup for rides where it's cold out when you leave, but warm by the middle of the ride? When it's hot the ride or cold all the ride clothes are easy, but i always have trouble around this time of year when the temperature changes a lot during the day. Either I wear a long sleeve thermal jersey and overheat even with it zipped down after it warms up, or i wear normal jerseys and I'm freezing on the first half of the ride. What do?

I live in a Temperate zone, thinner layers and more layers is what I found to work with how quickly the weather changes

poly cotton shorts
Nylon Mesh wife beater
Polyester Mesh long sleeve tee shirt (UPF rating of 50)

if its really cold I will bring a nylon shell suit and wear its jumper when riding
the leggings are not needed unless I will be sitting still for a long time or staying over night at a place

if it becomes too warm later in the day I unzip the jumper then zip it up behind the small of my back
or take it off and tie the arms around my neck / shoulders
wearing it like a cape or rolled up behind my neck

I also have Marino clothing but find it gets too warm and wears out easily

So I’ve blown 3 tubes this summer, all of them in a day or two of getting replaced. Worse case senerio my roughest terrain is a neglected alleyway concrete with potential broken glass.

Do I just try new tires at this point? I’m getting desperate. Is it better to get both new or will just replacing the problem tire be ok?

you should have worked out what was actually happening. Traced the place on the tube. Is it on the inside or the outside of the tube? Might it have been a burr or something on the rimtape/rim?
If it's a puncture on the outside, trace it to the tire. Is it the same place each time? Can you find the actual hole? Trace it. Don't just randomly search. Remove the debris. It might be hidden and repeating punctures.

If it's a snake bite your pressure is too low.

Also, if you install with tire levers, try not to do that. Learn to move the bead of your tire into the well of the rim as you push it on, go around doing that a bunch, to create slack, so you don't need to use levers and risk jamming.

You need to know WHY.

Agree, liners are the way. I haven't gotten a flat in over a year, from previously getting a flat every 3-6 weeks or so for a decade. I ride in the desert, so lots of goatheads and broken glass and shitty pavement.

from a bike shop point of view the benefit is mainly that you can have fewer frame sizes because the sloping top tube makes it easier to stand over. another benefit, especially with D-shaped seatposts is that it exposes more of the seatpost so the seatpost flex can contribute to compliance. now most road bikes have a slightly sloping top tube but not as extreme, especially aero bikes usually have it closer to horizontal.

caad13 is known for its exceptional compliance, giant has its D-fuse seatposts as well

with a squished shape like pic related you can tell with your intuition that it would flex forward and backward more easily than a fuller round shape, there's also mathematical formulas to predict the stiffness in each direction

and yeah you can make a D-shape seatpost that is stiffer and more aero, it's a trade off, but generally speaking the appeal of round seatposts is that you have more seatposts to choose from and they can be lighter but they're not the be all and end all
