There's a whole load of factors when comparing to western Europe.

>less stringent driving tests
>laxer drunk driving laws
>laxer seatbelt laws
>far more miles driven per person (probably the most significant factor)
>faster speeds (notice that rural states are the highest)

Part of it is that our roads are very poorly designed and not maintained. It's hard to drive safely when you're dodging potholes and you have to worry about swerving into a shared left turn chicken lane that may or may not have people driving in either direction

In general USA roads are much slower than european ones, but are poorly designed for the expected speeds and often encourage much higher speeds.

Anon, you forgot to convert mph to km/h. Here in TX the speed limit for lots of bigger highways is 75 and in some cases 80 or 85, which is pretty fast

Even residential streets are typically 25 mph in the USA (about 40 kph), while I see euros say that residential streets are limited to 30 (about 19 mph). Residential streets never seem insane to me if people obey the speed limits (they seem to always drive at least 10 mph over), but it’s still more.

Residential streets are typically 30mph in bongland/ireland and somehow they have the lowest rate. Motorways are 70mph or 120kmph or in the cause of the autobhan well you know.
