Imagine this: your job is to pick up something hot enough to burn you several times an hour. You can either wear a protective glove of a size randomly chosen by a roll of dice, could be way too small or too big, or you could use a dry cotton rag.
The brooks saddle is the equivalent of the rag. It says "I don't care enough to set up my bike properly, but I do want to look like a homeless man doing a bad impression of a mentally ill anglophile if at all possible.
