I remember once I was going to a gas station in AR right across the street from me, so I just crossed; the only crosswalks literally a mile and a half in either direction on the corner.
Wasn't dangerous but everyone told me I was an insane asshole and to use the walks that already existed.
Clearly there needed to be one there or it would be used, same for those fences.

Now, even with that small town, school choice might actually have you residing a couple town over or more.
