I live in Alaska and want a bicycle I can ride in the snow.

What's the cheapest bike I can buy that isn't trash? I want it to last and be relatively easy to maintain. I fix everything I own so I can do my own work on the bike.

Literally any rigid steel 90's mtb. All the bike you'll ever need, light and responsive yet robust and durable, able to cope in quite literally all condition planet earth can throw at it.

Cheap too, £150 can buy you pic related or similar, components that are still going strong more than 30 years after they were made and will outlast ANYTHING you can buy today.

Depending on how deep and loose the snow is, you will be falling over on one of them fatbikes as well. They're not magic.

depends on your usage case
if you're going to ride mostly on roads, get a junky mtb and a set of studded tires, no reason to get anything fancy since snow and especially salt will turn it into a shitbike within a month anyway.
if you're going to offroad, fatbike is a must because thinner bicycle wheels sink into snow.

There are a lot of decent mid-range fat bikes. Fat bikes are almost exclusively 1x. As long as you get something either 1x11 or 1x12 with 5" tires you should be good.

Below 11 speed compromises too much on either gear spacing or gear range.

Aluminum & rigid is adequate. Don't need carbon frame and a suspension fork for winter riding.

I paid ~700 € for mine second hand some year ago, and that was almost half off retail at the time. Looking at LBSs now a fatbike from a reputable brand seems to be around 2000 €.
Don't know how that translates to America. Possibly you might get away with something a bit cheaper.

Fat bikes are exclusively made for snow, right?
Are people who use them in the summer in lieu of MTBs to ride single tracks are doing it wrong?
To me it seems those tires would add unnecessary amounts of friction.

Snow, sand, mud, roots, rocks. All types of uneven and loose terrain. It's a poor mans full suspension with greater flotation.

A bit funky on single track. When the sides of the tires catch the edge of the cup shaped track it induces a pull to that side which can make going straight a challenge on narrow trails. Plus the bounciness of undamped tires also reduces control and hampers braking resulting in a lot more rear tire lockups. But the grip and low gearing lets you pedal up really steep stuff without spinning out the rear tire.

I wouldn't say they are too slow for trails. What gets me is people using them on pavement in the city during the summer, huge speed penalty vs any other type of bike.

I'll have to get mine out in a few more weeks for some saddle time to let my legs adjust.
