Not that difficult when you fly to the other side of the country and back for Thanksgiving and/or christmas. Doesn't mean anything whatsoever in the broader sense of public transport importance and usefulness however.

US public transportation makes people able to fly to the other side of the country and back for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. This exactly what you want from transportation: make range disappear, like it is in your neighborhood,

It's an incredibly minor facet of transportation. Most of it happens on your side of town within a couple mile radius from your home, and that's exactly where the US offer FUCKING NOTHING besides cars.

That is the point. Average euroopoor medieval serf lived in died within 30 miles radius of his village.

You can sort of do San Francisco without a car.
Downtown LA is walkable, I think.
Portland and Seattle might be feasible, but I've never been there so I'm not sure about that.
Philly, Boston and DC are good too.
Baltimore, St. Louis and Chicago would be walkable were it not for pavement apes.

Chicago downtown was nicer than Philly and far better than LA in terms of having to deal with aggressive homeless and panhandlers. LA is the worst I've ever experienced, though I haven't been to San Fran.

Both are okay, they were ahead of the game 20 years ago but feel like they gave up. Boston and DC are probably the best if they can afford it.

You don't rent motorcycles in the USA, you spend $1800 and just buy one from a redneck. It's roughly the same price as renting a car for 3-4 weeks but you can keep it or give it to a hobo and make him the king of the homeless camp when you leave.
