Just watched Paris-Roubaix and it was awesome.
What are the notable races you follow? Any good streaming sources? I'd watch Japanese Kirin racing if I knew how to.

I wish there were some short distance fixed gear street races or something, something where people just go all out rather than it being a marathon or a worse nascar.
Cyclocross is close, but the races are far too long.
Cross country has way too many riders holding everything back and the bikes are too able for the tracks imo.
The various track races are too sterile and mechanical, might as well watch horse races, it’s just something to bet on.

use pro cycling statistics to find the races that happened that day and then search for them on youtube.

Only track racing, love the quick time high effort nature of it and the different disciplines. No disrespect to the athletic achievements but road cycling is only good for the scenery and fucking boring otherwise.

track racing is pretty watchable even if you don't know who is involved.

But yeah still it's mostly comfy scenery and admiring the form of it.

The more often you watch this clip, the better it gets; fans stumbling, fans screaming, running in front of the tv motorcycle cameras. The Bersaglieri, the mountain troops with their feather hats, seem to take their jobs very seriously, though they appear to be absent minded and somehow out of place (a bit like their overall performance in WW2 lel).

This one is the most epic stage of the Giro i‘ve ever seen, well worth watching the whole video.

Nibali (in the Race leaders‘ Pink Jersey) and his team leader Basso crashed on the wet roads (before this clip starts), and were struggling to get back to the front where a very strong group of 20 riders were trying their best to not let that happen. Respect to Cadel Evans, in the World Champions‘ jersey, his first year at BMC.

That entire Giro was excellent, I took off from watching in '12 after Wouter Weylandt (RIP) died during a stage in '11. Cadel Evans cracks me up; he always looks pissed whether he wins or not.

Yea it was bizarre to see, really. Ahead of the peloton, you have a caravan of dozens of often custom made cars advertising products from sponors of the TdF, throwing small snacks and sweets into the cheering crowd of small and adult children. Before tan tI couldn’t have imagined that the TdF coming through some rural region would evoke so much enthusiasm and emotionality in spectators, who probably aren’t that interested in road cycling normally.

I'm completely out of the loop and dumb when it comes to watching sports in general, but since I was forced to watch F1 with some co-workers last weekend and after they explained all this shit to me, I found it kinda enjoyable, I want to know how to watch cycling races. I've seem some tour and giro parts here and there, but aside from watching guys in lycra ride across some really nice areas, I have no idea what's going on. Any pointers /n/? So it's pretty much like drafting in car racing huh? Must kinda suck being the teammate though.
What are some cool teams to cheer? Who are the villains / universally hated guys like Mercedes in F1?
I also noticed that some riders have cables on their bike, while others use electronic shifting and possibly brakes? How big a role does tech play in bike racing?

Yes, also helps keep them protected in case of crashes. The basic riders, the domestiques, are responsible for falling back and gathering food and water bottles from team cars and then hauling ass back to the peloton; domestiques also have different skills, some are fast in the flats and attack against other teams on the straightaways, others are hillclimbers who attack on the climbs, etc. As far as villains, I'm not up on the current ones, it's usually whoever has been suspected/busted for doping most recently or who's winning the most. Racing pretty much drives the tech in the bike world, the local lycra guys at the bike shop lust after their favorite racers' new gadgets and really keep bike shops afloat, much more consumerist than your average everyday commuter cyclist.

Not necessarily. Even though there aren’t formal categories for them, certain superdomestiques get their share of the limelight. Michael Morkov and Sepp Kuss come to mind, Michael basically slingshotting his sprinter to wins with ease and Sepp being Roglic’s attack dog in the mountains, setting the pace and chasing back moves for him were both particularly iconic this year.

Ok so let me get this straight, there's different categories of people in the race with different roles? Is there any points system and if so, how are these awarded? Like say I'm one of those domestiques and I happen to be at the top when it comes to hauling those bottles to the peleton, do I get an award, some points? Also, how does riding in such close proximity protects from crashes, the few races I've seen, one guy falls and the whole bunch is on the ground among broken carbon bits.
Also, for those supporter racers, don't they get bored or salty for playing second fiddle? Or maybe I have all this approach wrong, because of a car racing perspective?
Sorry, for so many questions, this is very new and interesting to me, as I said, I'm dumb when it comes to understanding sports. If there's a 'for dummies' guide online, just point me to it.

No, most are happy getting paid to ride their bikes around the world, but in most stage races the overall winner is decided by time, so as long as all the top riders fighting over the overall win (the GC, or general classification) are close by each other, one of the teammates can put in an attack and try to win the stage, which is a glory in its own right.

They're usually the young up and coming riders or older guys who's specialty (sprinting, descending, etc.) is still in demand. It's basically how you pay your dues in order to become the main big dog at some point. They often switch teams in order to move up because they might never get a chance on their current team, but a lot of guys know they'll never be the name guy and are satisfied with a supporting role. George Hincapie rode with Lance Armstrong for years and is more repected now that Lance is even though he was usually always second or third banana on the team; kinda like being a star actor or a character actor, you can make a good living if you find your niche.
