front derailleurs are indeed archaic technology in the sense that they haven't been properly updates for like a century, and they never worked great to begin with
that doesn't mean the need for a multiple chainring drivetrain is also obsolete. someone just needs to come up with a better way to shift chainrings. just like they did with the rear derailleur.

Because chain angle stress is already an issue. Back in the day you were advised not to run the chain on opposite ends of the chainring and cassette, then special bendier chains had to be developed for 1x drivetrains with large cassettes, but even in that regard we seem to have hit the barrier of making the links so slack that the chain becomes way too loose and experiences intolerable amounts of stress and wear as a result.

The thing is that multiple chainrings in the front don't increase your gear range by a huge amount and instead mostly introduce unnecessary inbetween gear ratios or entirely redundant gear ratios, and in return add weight and complexity to the bike and stress to the chain whenever the chain guide forces it to change gear.

With a traditional cassette only? Current technology allows for about 15 speed. But we will probably never get there, as even with 12 it starts to get pretty ridiculous to click umpteen times to get from one end of the block to the other.

You could use a grip shifter or a thumb shifter then you can shift as many cogs as you want with a single movement of your finger

the biggest issues with fds were:

>trim for crosschaining

'hard to setup' isn't a real issue either.

1x is the future and the technology is already here. It's just mostly marketed at the gravel segment but Campy Ekar is just as good on the road. You get the same range as 2x12 and the jumps are still almost the same.
