Alright, thanks. I have a bicycle too. I enjoy bicycling so much that I bought a motorcycle. So far, I despise the motorcycle. I've had my bicycle up to a GPS tracked 50mph coming downhill and I hit close to 40mph regularly on my nightly ride. It's fun. I thought a motorcycle might be like a bicycle I could take on the highway but they are nothing alike. I crashed the motorcycle immediately and couldn't get parts because of COVID and the container ship crisis. So, I just brought the bike home with a bag full of broken parts. Now, I've got enough parts to put it back together but this thing is like, wtf?

Anyway, I did figure out since posting and the shop had replaced it with a new one before I brought the bike home. So, it's just a trash part now I guess. If you're wondering, it goes under the finder and helps support the plastic front fender.

Maybe don't start on a 500? I wouldn't know, I haven't ridden a motorized bicycle with more power than an e-scooter, but the 450cc – 600cc beginners seem to get memed on the most. Try a 250.

I wanted a cb300 initially but there were like no bikes for sale, not beginner bikes anway. It ended up being a toss up between the cb500x and a Royal Enfield Himalayan. The cb500x won out because after doing some research it's the least powerful motorcycle I could get that I'll be able to take on the highway without pegging the tachometer. I wanted a weaker bike, like you suggest but a 250 can barely go hold speed above 60mph which is not safe on American highways. I don't plan on doing any road trips this year but I wanted a bike I could do that with.

As for the crash, it was poor throttle control on my part. I'm not comfortable at all and think it's retarded that the entire grip is the throttle. It would be like having to hold on to the gas pedal to steer your car, retarded IMO but apparently you aren't really supposed to grip the bars at all like on a bicycle, it's more just gently caressing them while you counter steer. At any rate, I hadn't realized that when you take the 3 day safety class they provide you a 250 with which you take the class. I thought I had to go buy my motorcycle and take it to the class. Now that I know that's not the case, the bike is sitting in the garage safely until I complete the class next week.

bikes are faster and more legitimate in traffic, easier to leave outside (just take a parking space lmoa stay mad cagie) and much cooler in every way as far as general perception goes, but the helmets are stuffy, everything is noisy, you can’t really get away from the smell and you get that weird climate where it’s simultaneously too hot, too cold and everything chafes from the wind
also no punctures

I also wiped out a couple of times, don’t worry about it, just remember to always be retard-confident, steer with your head and stay off any paint on the road, especially in the wet

Good on you for taking the safety course, Anon. I agree about the grip throttle thing. There should be some aftermarket partial grip throttle assembly for those who want it, but those only exist for weak electric motors. I hope you don't crash, but if you do just keep getting back on the bike. No one learned anything without failure.

and crashed at his 6m8s mark on that f'ing paint stripe. I go considerably faster than the guy that made this video and had been slowly up the speed daily. That day, a work crew was at the top of the hill grinding off the paint stripe. I thought, "Hmm that's weird" and continued on my ride. Well at his 6m8s mark I was leaned way over rounding that corner at around 20mph and my rear wheel accidentally went onto the stripe. My bike slid right out from under me and I was sliding down the pavement at that speed on my leg. It removed the skin from a large area. For the next month capillary bleeding (pus) would ooze out of my leg when I bent my knee and every day my socks were hard with dried crusted puss when I took them off. Scabs covered my leg and it was just generally disgusting. What I remember most though was sitting on the trail thinking, "Oh, that's why they were grinding the paint stripe off. I'm clearly not the first one to do this and I'm a moron for not recognizing this before I crashed."
Anyway, yeah lesson learned on the paint thing.

A cb500x is fine to start out with if you're an adult and don't feel the need to prove yourself. If you're really worried they're popular learner bikes so you can get restricter kits for them.

You'll be better off finding the service manual for it and looking through the parts pages until you find it. It looks like a vibration damper or something non-critical, could even be aftermarket.
