Anyone here into model trains at all? I've never really been a train autist but I find the Japanese high-speed rail fascinating and wish I had something nearby with even 1/2 as much utility.

I've been thinking about making a diorama of Japan on a coffee table in my garage with a little train goin around on it but other than maybe getting a bunch of foam board stuff I'm not really sure where to get started. Seems fucking crazy how expensive the hobby is but I think it would be a ton of fun.

There’s a ton of Japanese N scale and it’s easy to mail order from Japan and cheaper than you’d think. Model trains are huge in Japan unlike other places where it’s a dying boomer hobby. I like their trams like in pic but there’s a lot of Shinkansen models if that’s what you’re looking for. I’ve ordered through eBay stores like Plaza Japan but there’s a lot of other sources. You’ll be amazed at the variety of Japanese models available.

One quick warning: besides Shinkansen, everything is made at 1/150 scale, with 9mm track gauge (the real things are mostly 1067mm narrow gauge).

My favorites are some of the depressingly tiny trains that American railroads were running in the years just before Amtrak.

Famous, named trains reduced to the bare minimum of service required by government (which wouldn't let them kill the service all together).

Somewhere on the internet there's a blog post of a guy who booked a ticket on one of those ghostly trains in the South in the late 60s and the conductor was flabbergasted that someone was actually paying to ride the train.
