here in Hungary only one line has automatic control system, that one only has underground stops and both terminuses have a shunting station after the platforms, so no big deal if sthg happens; we have only one terminus like OP's pic related (ground-level, unprotected from weather, track ends at the platforms), and that requires drivers with smooth hands on the brake in fall time
