It's a surprisingly common position experienced people hold about square taper cranks for several reasons (though i think it's nonsense).
personally i lightly grease them but jesus christ if you look up square taper cranks there is not an orthodox approach to them there's a bunch of incredibly confusing contradictory information. Sheldon and Jobst Brandt ranting about them is especially entertaining/helpful/nonsense.
A noob trying to learn how to deal with them is probably going to end up thinking they need a torque wrench and loctite.
