>>1723841old bikes like yours have either a 32 or 37 mm thick tire
and sometimes a larger diameter of wheel rim .eg 635 or 630 mm this gives long spokes and longer forks and chain stays .ie more bendy
more modern bikes have smaller wheel rim diameters such as 622 mm or 584 mm, (1990s Mountain bikes being 559 mm)
with road bikes up till around the 1990s having narrow 23 mm tires and side pull calliper brakes with a maximum tire clearance of 28 mm
hybrid or touring bikes have brakes and frames that allow for greater tire clearance
.eg centre pull brakes, canter lever brakes, mini v brakes
many modern hybrids come with the tire size of 38-622
up until recently tire sizes between 47 and 54 mm were most common on Mountain bikes
but the thicker tires are now available for the larger wheel rim diameters as on Cyclocross or Gravel bikes
a given width of rim can handle a farely wide range of tire thickness
each tire manufacture has charts for this based roughly on the charts provided by ETRTO
a crochet rim with an inner width of at least 17 mm can handle tire thickness between 25 and 52 mm
19 and 21 mm interior width rims are better suited to the tires of 54 mm and thicker
