Generally 30ft in a nutshell,If the tracks abandoned or not a mainline they generally won't care much,mostly on abandoned spurs.
usually they'll shoo you away.
if you're a amerifuck like most of us,UP is really prissy down near LA and trackage though with more homeless it depends on the area mostly the big cities they get pissed.
BNSF however is a lot more chill from my experience as long as your not up to shit or walking in middle of the tracks like a retard they mostly will tell you to shoo if it's a rail-cop or some uptight guy,Most of their workers have just said be careful stick to the side to me when i have.
Shortlines i have no idea it depends on the frequenty of use and local cops/sheriffs as they cant always afford their own Rail-Police
