Where I live (Texas), it's always Mestiza mommies, several kids in tow, and at least one chihuahua.
If you haven't had the pleasure of being around these little fuckers (the dogs, not the brown people), their habit is to walk backwards. They hear a noise and will turn to face it, but they're cowardly small creatures so they'll yap at you, constantly walking backwards to keep their distance. It makes reigning them in less predictable, as they're better poised to dart in front of you.
Language is usually a problem too. You can't just say "On your left", because there likely won't be a acknowledgment or response. "Eh? Quién me hablando? Debería aprender Inglés algún día..." Same with the kids. And I'm not about to say "perdona".
So yeah, I use a fucking bell.
