Throw the mother unit’s energy from dynamic braking back into the batteries too. Then you have a unit that can recharge itself on the move and not be deadweight when the normal speed for slug cutoff is met.

Though CN are missing a trick by not electrifying the B&LE. Regenerative braking from downhill trains that’s otherwise wasted can be used to help power uphill trains, especially if a 1-up, 1-down system is used.
