Thoughts on guided buses ?

Unlike trolleybuses or rubber-tired trams, for part of their routes guided buses are able to share road space with general traffic along conventional roads, or with conventional buses on standard bus lanes.

Seen my first one today was pretty cool.

They're cool, but their utility is offset by the cost of laying down a busway that's essentially a long but low viaduct.

The future of busways, if there is one, will be optically guided types because you can just pave a conventional road which is more practical and less expensive.

I don't understand why they have to be guided and why the bus can't just drive down a presumably far cheaper regular road lane. Is steering so stressful for drivers? Also are you willing to get the entire route disabled by a breakdown?

It's still cheaper than a tram and buses still offer flexibility that trams never will. And if a transit system wants some kind of busway, then they've already realized a tram either won't work best for them or is simply too expensive.

As far as I'm aware bus drivers generally manage not to crash into each other on normal roads, too. Guided buses just seem like local politicians larping as being serious about public transport but not wanting to spend money on actual rails so they install some retarded buses that pretend to be trams.

Bus ways are normally narrower than normal roads, the Cambridge one runs an old British rail alignment that wouldn't fit a two way road under normal safety rules

They are the cheapest dedicated transit system to implement but costliest to maintain.

It sounds cool but gives no practical advantage and if you need that in a first place, you probably can just make a regular bus line.

Here's a combined bus/tram station. I'm not sure what the current state of their system is, I think some of the busways have been removed since these photos were made.

Buses are cheaper to purchase, maintain, and operate than trams. That's been true since the 1920s, when public transit systems began replacing streetcars with buses. Steel wheels on steel rail is more efficient than tires on pavement, but it's still a myopic argument.

Imagine living in a suburb and getting on a local bus, which can then jump on a busway to head downtown. It would change riding the bus from "fuck this" to "this is alright, I can get used to this"

Busways are a method for a medium sized transit system to get rail-like quality and operations without making the huge jump in cost to rail, although it's still not exactly cheap.

I'm working in Essen, most sections already got closed and demolished again due to low efficiency, which is not surprising as most stretches were just a couple of hundred meters long. The underground duo-bus section you see here >>1732714 was already discontinued in the mid 90s due to low reliability.

There's pretty much only one section left, which is located between the lanes on a highway. It was a former tramline and the local authorities probably would love to turn it back into one, but new regulations regarding catenary next to highways make it almost impossible, means they're pretty much stuck with the last bit for the forseeable future. Yeah but the point is that you can have a normal busway, that is a two-way road that's exclusive for buses, and it gets you the same thing but without the expense of the guided busway.

But in any case, realistically, very few cities will actually make significant investments in bus infrastructure, even if they are economically viable in the sense that it's cheaper than, say, an LRT or Metro, but offering a good service. It's like a mental hurdle that the point of buses is using existing infrastructure and maybe getting a bus lane at most. Ironically, the only significant exception to this is BRT, which otoh is stupid because it's intended for high capacity and thus ends up always being more expensive than LRT in the long run.

Yes they are. Again, you're making too myopic of an argument.

Essentially worthless when for the cost of building the guided section of the bus path you could just cut in rails and run a true electric tram/trolley system. For wider metropolitan use you're never going to defeat normal road buses and with buslanes costing next to nothing to add to existing roads you can't really justify the guided bus concept.

I love the concept of a vehicle that can travel on tracks and also move freely on roads, but I have an irrational dislike towards creaky, noisy, smelly and lumbering buses. It would be cool if the vehicle was some kind of a futuristic articulated battery electric bus that can draw power along the guided routes.

What is the reason behind a wide first door and narrow other doors?
I saw a lot of examples from Australia and the USA, and still cannot understand them. In Europe, the first door has about the same width as the others, or narrower. At most places, the passengers must be guided to the driver during boarding, who can check their passes or sell tickets, so the first door must be narrower than the others, ot the driver simply opens only half of the door. Even in some countries the first half of this door leads to the drivers' seat...

But here this is exactly the same reason of the narrow first doors. While the others remain wide to make getting off faster.

Not at the suburban versions.
But it isn't only about Ikaruses, ÜL313s, O307s, S215ULs, even SG221ULs also have these details.

Rail maintenance is more expensive than bus maintenance. In addition to the rail vehicles themselves, the tracks, signals, stations, and catenary all need inspection and upkeep.
