They do have very clean lines. In fact I think all B units do, there's no cab to break the outline.
It's a similar thing to CSX and NS' road slug conversions, there's very few grilles on the side. They look neater than the mother units

More tractive effort, which helps prevent trains stalling.
In addition, they help to reduce fuel use as they don’t have a prime mover idling and contributing nothing on easier sections.

It’s why several shortlines use them (pic related Pacific & Western) as their slower speeds require less hp, but they have high tractive effort needs. Ideal conditions for slug usage.

Good point, especially with a road slug and single mother unit. However, if you have the slug sandwiched between two mothers then it can still contribute TE, the train will just be slower. Though you’ll still be down 1 unit worth of hp either way and have the deadweight of the failed unit to lug around until it can be detached.

Most of the jobs that get assigned road slugs don’t have speed as their top priority. It’s not like a manifest would have slugs attached as road power.

SNCF Class C 61000 with TC 61000 slugs in the 70s. All have been withdrawn. Twelve slugs were built, and only one still exist today (sadly not working).

The UK had something similar with the BR class 13. They were a permanently coupled master/slave unit made from two class 08 diesels.

They were used in Tinsley yard to push wagons over the hump without grounding.

A and B unit. Both still had their 350hp engines, so neither was a slug.
Along with one having the cab and controls removed, they had extra weights added to assist adhesion.

Not sure on this one, it's not a B unit and I don't know if it's a slug. It does have its own battery power source and doesn't take power from a mother unit.

Quick question, train autists. I saw a car that looked like this today, I was wondering what it's purpose was. It was flat and had a central divider running lengthwise along the platfoem. There were oval cutouts in the divider.

Doesn't make sense. You're just putting more hours on the prime mover to charge it, which results in higher overall emissions and energy wasted through converting the energy in fuel to electricity.

Robot-5 was an old MLW (Alco) unit. I remember seeing it many times back in the day when the most common CP Rail robots were made from boxcars.

When you say "old baggage cars" do you mean the express reefers?

I like B-units, C-liners especially.

SNCF class BB 64700 with TBB 64800 slug, used for yard shunting.
Basically an upgraded SNCF class BB 63500 (new cab with new controls, AC alternator instead of DC generator, received later a new engine) coupled with a heavily modified BB 63000.
Some are fitted with radio-control.
Fun fact : They have been designed this way so they could fit without uncoupling on the workshop's 24 meter (78.74 feet) turntable where I work.

It's an automatic couping for switching operations.
Since buffer-and-chain couplers are rather work-intensive to couple correctly, switchers are often equipped with these to just grab the hook on the railcar to drag it about. As the brakelines etc. remain unattached, this is for switching only.

Theyre nice on the yard jobs and locals when you dont necessarily need another motor but you need a little more power. Especially for the yard jobs. We just had one of our GP35s rebuilt with the medha system and if you laced a slug to it, that pair would easily switch the longest track we had on our line

Actually anons, wouldn’t re-motoring the older B-B diesels with AC motors work better than having a slug?

You can get ~100k-lbf or more out of 4 AC motors. There’d be fewer units to maintain and the efficiency would improve as the train:loco weight ratio would increase.

I understand expense is probably the main reason for this not happening already. Are there any other reasons why?

It would mean a locomotive rebuild. In addition to the traction motors you'd need to swap the generator for an alternator and replace the electrical system. But a rebuilt 4-axle locomotive (DC or AC) is more practical than converting it to a slug for most railroads.

Shortlines are great. This is the second one i worked for. Usually management is a lot more relaxed as long as you get your work done. We still run on 40mph CTC territory. Were basically a class 1 branch line with how much we move and how our operations are.

Depends on your job. When you start youll be at the bottom of the board so expect nights, weekends, holidays, etc. The good thing about shortlines is youll move up in seniorty quicker. When i hired out i was spot 36 on the board 4 years ago. Now im spot 12. The last railroad i was on i was spot 18 when i hired and i was spot 10 when i left there

I saw the last two Baldwin "sharknose" diesels are finally being given to a museum. There were matching B-units for them, but they're all scrapped. This is one of the better pics I could find of them, a demonstrator set in 1949.

Not necessarily.
If they routed some of the power they generate during dynamic braking from the resistors to those batteries there wouldn't be so much strain on the prime mover.

Virtually none, but if it didn't have to recharge its battery slug then it could auto-stop itself and consume zero fuel.

I imagine it would need to rev up to a higher notch to accomplish meaningful charging though, especially if time was a factor
