I have browsed 4chan for 13 years and have never visited /n/ today that changes.

>I am self employed and I live about 8 miles from my work in a very rural area. People generally are not friendly to bikers, however I want to start biking to work, however I always take my (small) dog with me to work.

What is the best way to get my dog and me to work? Buy a trailer or something for the bike? I have never cycled in my life other than using the airdyne at the gym.

you could also just get a regular rear rack, and zip tie a big metal basket or crate on it for the dog to sit in

This is actually the third version of /n/. It was originally a train board in the beginning, copied from 2ch. The n is for norimono, things that roll on wheels.

I ride fairly often with a guy (Paul) who brings his dog. All sorts of riding--bustling traffic, rain, night, etc. We've also done several multi-day tours where the dog comes along. No idea what kind it is, but it doesn't bark.

Anyway, a trailer is a pain in the ass. So you have two places to attach a dog basket, front or rear. Putting weight on either affects how the bike handles, but it's way more obvious when you have a front load.

A front basket lets you to check on the dog very easily, but the weight rides higher up (wonky handling for you), and the basket experiences more movement, both from steering, and because there'se less weight (you) to dampen bumps. You'll also have to have a smaller basket (front racks are smaller), and your dog is sitting in the wind vs your shadow (matters if it's cold/raining).

A rear rack & basket is the opposite of those last three--rides in your shadow, larger basket, experiences more mellow movement. With the rear you almost have to run a fender, otherwise your dog catches road spray. Also, it's a pain to swing your leg high over a rear basket. 1/2

I've only ever seen Paul use a rear setup, the same thing across multiple bikes. Shallow wire basket maybe 15"x10"x4" (length width depth), with a section of 'election sign' in the bottom as a stiffener. The basket & board are fixed to the rack w/ stainless steel zip ties. There's a cushion in the basket, w/ extra flaps that fold over the edge & pull tight with a draw cord. Kind of hard to describe--from the dog's perspective, she can't see any wire, just fabric. On the underside of the cushion is some sew-on velcro that mates with stick-on velcro on the plastic board.

His touring bike has a canopy thing. A little roof mostly to keep the sun off the dog. Basically a fabric rectangle with a channel down either side that accepts a flexible tent pole. There's a little more to it, but you get the idea.

Also think about how to stabilize your bike, while you're putting the dog in. Most bikes don't have kickstands, but you can maybe just lean it against buildings, signposts, etc. Paul's touring bike has one of those monstrous double kickstands, but also his dog knows a trick. He'll set the dog on something (bench, stump, trash can lid, etc) tell it to wait while he gets on the bike. Then he gets real close and calls out, the dog jumps in the basket. 2/2
