unless you're a 5'3 twink or an Asian woman there's really no reason to be afraid of taking the metro in LA. If anything, Chicago and Boston have some sketchy subways but you can take the redline in the middle of the night and still be pretty safe, just carry a small pocketknife if worst comes to worst

depends on the neighborhood, but I’ve been seeing more and more bikers. if you’re near Hollywood, KTown, Downtown, or Mid-City just bite bullet and get a bus pass like the nice old Mexican and Asian ladies

it's not really as bad as you think, but you do need to be competent and able to shoulder-chexk without swerving before you do heavy traffic.

what rules is when they're gridlocked it's super safe. they can't move and you just go between them fast as fuck.

and when you cannot, then just ride slowly on the sidewalk
or
take the fucking lane. just dont do it at night in all black. most of LA blvds so the cars have multiple lanes to scoot over towards.
just make sure youre visible

traffic in LA proper is heavy enough that cars will be doing 25-40 down the blvds .... venture into OC or other surrounding mega suburbs and the blvd traffic is more like 35-60mph

Man I don't know about that. Most of LA is safe enough if you stick to the main streets but riding out into side streets and neighborhoods can be really sketch, especially if you look like you don't belong there or like you've got something worth taking. If you know the city well then you'll know where it's fine but a lot of people seem really oblivious and naive about how bad it can be.

When the college kids say we should be "more like Europe", they forget that in many European states the Police can still grab your ass and put it in a rehab center by force.
