Given natural growth patterns, walkable space naturally happens due to efficiency. It is only due to uncorrected externality of socialist planning that cager society happens, as land-wasteful transport gets subsidized to hell.

Anon, you understand that cities with less planning and zoning laws are more car centric.
Look at Houston, zero zoning laws whatsoever and yet its the epitome of low density, car-based design.
Cities in California had no regulations on planning or building back in the 50s and 60s and because of that they're all huge tracts sprawling suburbia only giving way to slightly more sensible design much later on when Cali became the overregulated hellhole it is today.
Given Natural growth patterns, cars take precedent over walkability due to efficiency.

Can we stop with the Houston meme? Houston does have land use regulations, just not zoning. There are deed restrictions which function largely the same as zoning does elsewhere.

I don’t think socialism is inherently car centric, I just think that post ww2 socialist policy became popular at the same time as car ownership became widespread. In the west, you had governments investing tons of public money into large scale infrastructure projects to help rebuild nations/lower unemployment. And in the east you had much the same but painted red. The new, futuristic, and sexy thing was the automobile whilst trains were seen as antiquated technology. In the west, cars meant status and wealth, where as in the east they were the great leveller. Either way, the only way forward was highways and 8 lane ceremonial boulevards.
I believe that the socialist policies of the 50s and 60s were the seed from which our love of cars was born, and now neoliberalism tends to the thorny weed that grew from it. Had socialism taken ahold in another era, you would have seen the same policies of high government investment going into other infrastructure projects and technologies. We just got seriously unlucky.
