A tire with an actual tread presents a series of edges to the surface, a slick presents a face, an edge can push through and clear debris better than a face and less energy is wasted to slipping.

Just because they ride knobbies on the road does not mean they don't need knobbies, part of their regular ride may require them, or they may just not care enough to buy new tires and are ok with working a bit harder, or they may do a fair amount of trail riding and do not care enough to swap tires or have a second bike for their small amount road riding. Plenty of valid reasons, why assume they are just ignorant morons?
