Ohio state gov is generally pretty hostile to transit. Michigan is even further out of the way in terms of national routes but we have at least daily service to almost all major cities. Wolverine is three times daily. Meanwhile Ohio literally has no trains to Columbus and only 3 a week in Cincinnati. Meme state.

Michigan also has many highways and one of the largest hub airports in the Midwest. Options are good and Ohio has less. Why would I want to drive to say, Chicago, and pay out the ass for parking or fly and deal with TSA and landing 40 minutes out town when I could just take a train?

There’s a difference between modern buildings made of matchbox material and late pre-modern buildings that were designed to last. Train stations were built to last forever back in the 1950s and earlier, since they thought train stations would last that long. Starting in the ‘80s, buildings started being built to decay after 30 years so they could charge you for a new building. Around 2008, buildings started to be constructed to only last 15 years, since consumers would put up with that.
This tells you why so many people prefer to live in buildings made in the 70s and earlier, even with the lighting and plumbing being a pain in the fucking ass to repair.

well, yes, that's correct; if your hypothetical 'historic k-mart' had been on the National Register of Historic Places, as the station was - i.e. recognised as belonging to one of these criteria - then i'm sure you'd agree that demolishing it would indeed be a sin.

a quick browse through the station's wikipedia suggests a bait-and-switch where the station was supposed to be turned into a transit center, but was then about-faced and demolished virtually overnight. welp what's done is done, no use crying over spilled milk, thoughts and prayers, now about that real estate...

Lastly, I'll mention that Columbus used to have Amtrak service back in the 70s. This station is long gone, but it's an absolute fit for the "Amshacks" thread.

How did you get this number? There are 7 white dots (existing service), and 9 green dots (proposed service).
Of those green dots, 4 (Columbus, Dayton, Hamilton, Crestline) previously had Amtrak service, but the stations have been demolished, except for the one in Hamilton (pic related, from April 2021).
