What do you guys wear when riding in the cold?
I'm using a windbreaker but I'm constantly either hot and sweating or cold and still sweating, no matter how I adjust the layers underneath.
I'm considering one of those jackets with a membrane on the front and a breathable back because right now riding just isn't any fun.

you'll always sweat. the windbreaker probably isn't helping - i only use a shell if the wind is truly out of control or if its doing that awful wet snowdrizzle. i wear light or medium merino base layers top and bottom, wool socks, rapha pants or shorts, sweatshirt or flannel, wool gaitor, wool cycling cap with ear cover flap. this works for me down to just below 40 freedom units, for spirited riding or just commuting. freezing and colder than that, im just commuting so i'll wear a construction flagger jacket unzipped and just toodle along to keep from sweating.

I started riding only this year after summer since I purchased my first bike since I was a kid.

look for a windbreaker with "pit zips", zippers on the armpit area. unzip them when you warm up and it allows heat to escape and some air circulation but the direct, cold wind can't get in.
also, I wear a tight, synthetic base layer like a compression tank top which allows sweat to wick off your body instead of drowning you in sweat like a cotton tank.
I wear one or two layers in between which I tuck into my pants and then untuck when I get hot.
the layer can be a button-up or zip up, undo the collar and on down to blast your front with cool air if

iunno maybe that's obvious but that's what I do.

My rapha core winter jacket has this and it works extremely well, I’ve worn it in temps from 25-45 and it’s been great. Definitely more of a roadie styled piece though.

I wear a Gore Windstopper jacket with a different base layer under it depending on the temperature and expected exertion level. Much of the time its just a really thin base. I like 1/4 zip base layers with a high neck, helpful to avoid a gap when using a balaclava.

My stomach gets colder than the rest of my upper body while riding so I wrap a scarf around it rather then adding an entire extra layer which would just make me sweat more.

My first winter riding I wore a non-breathing windbreaker on a ride and ended up completely drenched with sweat.

Weather is quite cold here now, around -20C but still went for a ride in the forest and did a little test on a frozen lake.
I'm kind of a afraid of cycling across the lake or going on the sea as it hasn't been that cold for more than a day yet, but maybe in the weekend I'll try cycling over the frozen lake.
In terms of gear I think I really need a balaclava and thick wollen socks as my face and toes froze but otherwise it was bretty gut.

so i built up picrel a week ago and i'm still dialing in the fit after days of commuting on it; it's getting a little tiresome. otherwise all the quirks have been shaken out. the ride quality is great, very yachty and smooth. these amber running lights feel V E H I C U L A R to me and i kinda like it. might get another set for the back.

I made a pair of USB to barrel adapters to try with my heated gloves. 5V USB with the controller set to high generates a bit less heat than my 7.4V batteries set to low. I should be able to not even use the controller and just plug straight into the battery.

A few days ago I was looking to buy an adapter but couldn't find one. Today I searched again and found one, I must have been a little off with my search terms. The non-hack ones are more compact and stronger since they are molded into a single piece of plastic. I would have ended up making a pair anyway since it will be a month or more before the ones from aliexpress arrive.

its going very well thank you. I haven't weighed myself so I'm operating under the assumption that I'm still BMI 30.5 or thereabouts but I'm doing 110km a week. I tried the mountain yesterday however and I was physically not strong enough to get up it. Damn the knee arthoscopy takes me out for a month. So I bought my bike to the coast for nothing.

My ride last night was nice at first but about halfway through if almost started raining but instead was just dew floating in the air instead which was worse really because I still got soaked but it wasn't like real rain that rolls off you. Was still kinda fun though. gp5ks are absolutely fantastic in the rain, i was impressed

it was in the 60s today. yeah, the planet is fucked, but it was nice to ride with no gloves. rode for 3 hours and got a feel for the new brakes i installed this week. i didn't realize how terrible the stock pads were because i didn't have anything to compare it to.

I have a Sora grabble and using it for forest trails/mountain climbing as well. Regarding the brakes it is best to switch to TRP Hy-Roads, the difference between the mech-hydro vs full mech brakes is immense, you will have a much better time over the roots descending.
It is the closest you get to actual hydro brakes without having to replace the entire groupset

Holy fuck you guys are a pain in the ass. I have two bikes, one with flats for commuting and one with clip ons for fun. I was just pointing out the difference that there is between a flat and clip setup is really strong. Also due to low cost of the setup is easy to try and probably you can resell it if you dont like it.
I sincerely was skeptical at first, but I really enjoy riding with SPD now. Ride and enjoy wathever you like. Peace.

Had a knee athroscopy and debridement due to a plica on Tuesday. Can't ride for 4-6 weeks now, can't even go outside (which is psychologically cooking me)

I'm being judged hard for it though. Had to go to Emergency on Wednesday cause I was in so much pain and the nurses were like

I've had this injury for 2 years. COVID helped it a little bit but I've been waiting for this since the end of 2019.

I had to travel interstate to do it too, so I'm at my parents house right now. I actually took the bike with me cause I grossly underestimated how long it'd take to recover.

So now I'm stuck at my parents place with nothing to do except shitpost and its mentally killing me.

That's just because I got confused over which pressure I had to put in my tyres.
Absolute pressure is the real pressure inside the tyre.
Relative pressure is absolute pressure minus atmospheric pressure (which is 1 bar).

The manometer will show the relative pressure of the tyre so depending on if 2.1 bars were absolute or relative I did not know if i had to put 1.1 or 2.1 . But whatever I am not a pro rider, no need to overthink things I'll just see how it goes.

Sadly the small bags I wanted to use don't play well with my front rack, so grocery run today was just rear bags and handlebar bag. Still got over 50lbs of food home, but gonna have to pick up some new panniers to spread it around better.

You need to clean your bike and watch Calvin Jones (Parktool YT channel) on derailleur adjustment and possibly spoke truing. It shouldn't take long to get your friend back into a working state.

not sure why everyone is being so hard on me, as if they've never had mechanical trouble, but whatever. derailleur is in good adjustment, wheel was true before today. problem is that the spokes come so close to the extrusions on the back of the cassette that it may be impossible to keep them from touching under certain circumstances. pic related, there's not even a mm of room between cassette and spoke. unfortunately one of the spokes has been knocked loose. will just take the wheel to the fellow who built it, see what he has to say.

130mm OLD and 12speed doesn't sound right... i can see the hub is a suntour one. What's the model and what casette are you using? It looks like the wheel needs to be re-tensioned to move it further towards the non-drive side, or you need a larger diameter cassette on the lowest gear.

Those extrusions are designed to catch the chain if it comes off the cassette and into the wheel. You could dremel them off as a last resort but i would check with the wheelbuilder whether he can adjust the wheel first.

I don't often wear goggles since they are a pain with glasses, even if the goggles don't fog the glasses do. On colder days I have balaclava with velcro strips and attach a windproof face mask that I took off another balaclava. I can undo one side and let it dangle to prevent fogging. I find I have to undo it when stopped or going down wind to prevent fogging.

Unfortunately most masks attach at the back of the head which makes them impossible to remove one handed while riding.

After 4 winters of use the heat pads from a pair of heated socks I used as boot heaters broke so I made a new set and bumped up the power by about a watt. The original were 2 pads per boot. New ones as a single pad I could lay out the heat loops for better coverage. Its wider than the boot so it wraps around my toes no both ends.

Used 2 pieces of poly vapor barrier which could be heat bonded with an iron. Some kapton tape to tack the loops in place before sealing. Then some liquid electrical tape to fill the spot where the wires come out as the plastic doesn't bond in those spots. Plastic doesn't seal around the tape either, so I should have kept it further from the outside border in a few spots.

You can get these kind of heating pads on ebay, ali, banggood for a few dollars each, cheaper than DIY.

One thing that really helps keep my face warm while walking around in the cold is a jacket hood. I think it somehow creates back pressure / turbulence that reduces the speed of the air flowing past your face.

I'm not sure what would be the best way to replicate that effect for cycling. Even without a helmet it would block your peripheral vision and restrict head movement.

Maybe a fur piece that attaches to helmet and chin straps would replicate the effect.

The hub is a SunXCD-branded Novatec F272 or similar, cassette is Campy 12sp. It looks like the problem is that the hub's flanges and the tabs are incompatible. I found out that's why Chris King discontinued Campy-compatible rear hubs. I wonder if that's why Campy backed away from using the dork tabs for 13sp? Anyway, it looks like my options are to dremel, get an Edco or Miche cassette, or get new wheels. Thank you both and >>1744580

You can get attachments for your helmet straps that block the wind to your ears. They make a huge difference if it's windy especially. You can also make your own easily with random materials. Search for "cat ears for bike helmet" or something like that, should get some results

Rode way up north to a suburb I've never been to before to check out a really nice hike & bike trail and a new bike road alongside a highway. Was very fun, lots of people out on the trail but i was just lightly cruising so that's ok. Ended up riding quite a bit more grabbel than i expected because i took a wrong turn (several times) and ended up on some easy mtb trails, which was pretty fun. Got lost and had to check my map like a dozen times on the way back, ended up riding 75 miles even through i only planned 63 because of how badly i got lost, but was very fun anyways, and always cool to see a new part of the city

Went into the woods today, pretty poorly equipped ride. I stupidly bungied my bananas to my rack and lost them(busted) pretty quickly. Slicks really aren't too terrible as long as I stay out of the super loose sand, but I did get pretty deep into a trail and was stuck walking for a bit. Still pretty fun sliding around at a decent speed, though.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a small rack bag? Just need some space for a bottle, food, and an extra tube.

a small trunk bag may work for you. ortlieb has a nice one (called the "trunk bag" because that's how ortlieb rolls) but is spendy, amazon has the usual aliexpress stuff with randomly generated brand names like sahoo and wotow. if you want to go even cheaper, diy with a small bin or bucket, bungee cord, and hooks.

a handlebar bag would be better as then you can access it while riding but idk if you have space for more than a very small one

I did test fit a couple of Sunlite handlebar bags at my bike shop, they were a bit awkward. It's fine if I can't access it while riding out in the woods since keeping on the bike is definitely a two hand job considering all of the soft patches and whatnot. I'll have to check Amazon since the Topeak and Bontrager ones the shops have around me were fairly pricey. But the nice thing is that they usually operate with a quick release system which I would prefer. If I can't find anything like that on amazon I may just spend the extra cash and get something I'd prefer the functionality of.
I used to have just a file crate on the rear, but it was flimsy and stuck off too far, I could just use a plastic container with a locking lid, but having stuff bungeed on is kind of inconvenient. Wonder if I could fashion up an easily releasable mount for this old tool bag I'm not using.

look into road runner or north street for a proper handlebar bag. if you just want something cheaper that works, try the local army surplus store and look for MOLLE system pouches/packs/bags, whatever fits between the drops. the bag loops would go over the tops and the bag rests against the head tube.

Went the ultimate poorfag route of just fashioning a handlebar bag out of an old backpack I never used. The caveat being that one side has to be held on with zip ties since I made the handlebar straps too small. If I had some buckles it would be a bit better, but I would still have to zip tie the hang strap around the stem since otherwise it would hang too low. The bag still holds everything I need.

yeah they did rub on the tire a bit, but it wasn't anything bad. After a couple super hard bumps and a couple of falls the bag did work its way forward to where it would rub on the tire, though. Going to take it back off and try and refit it or add another strap on the back to go around the stem, but this was my first time using a sewing machine in a decade and i really don't know what I'm doing.

I tried to get into full autism road cycling but gradually turned my road bike into a cruiser. It was fun going hella fast at first but the position left a lot to be desired when cruising around the city all day, so I replaced the clipless pedals with "half clips" and raised the handlebars to the point where it looks a bit retarded.

Bought meself a mountain bike and I'm going to sell the road bike. It seems like the ideal compromise. Upright position for comfiness, lockable front fork for versatility, and the ability to hit the trails, which seems way more fun than chewing up miles on smooth roads. It's not much heavier than my road bike at 12.5kg vs 10.3kg.

One year I decided to do all 12 gran fondos since they had given out patches in previous years. Wouldn't you know that was the year they stopped doing it. That last 100 km ride on studded tires was rather miserable.

I was carrying a little bag of mixed nuts, lots of sunflower seeds in there but the birbs went straight for the raisins
it's great to go places where there's hardly any people other than cyclists, wildlife are used to us and get pretty close, I often run into foxes and whatnot

First ride of the year this evening. I hadn't ridden for 11 days due to it being crazy cold. Snowshoeing for few hours in the afternoon, then a 3 hour ride after supper was a bit much. My legs were toast on the way back.

Really nice today -5C for the snowshoeing, then between -7C and -13C for the evening ride. Back to colder again for at least a week around -20C for the highs. That's warm enough I should be able to get out for up to 1.5 hours.

Doesn't work on sand. There's no grip to be had. It just slides and falls over. Not that there's much sand around here to ride. Plenty of mud though. In the summer it covers all my mtb needs, but it's primary purpose is as a winter commuter.

The trouble with a fatbike is that the range of sand that's ridable on a fatbike but not on an ordinary mtb is really rather narrow.

snow expected tonight, so the roads are caked in salt. i drove up to the MUP for a cruise. got clotheslined by a little terrier on one of those extendable leashes like 10 seconds after the lady looked over her shoulder and saw me coming. then i came to a section of the trail that they had salted (wtf) and it was big chunky pointy salt. flatted. my saddlepack is due to arrive tomorrow, but i gambled on a long ride without one because of the snow in the forecast. i had to walk 12 miles back to my car in the cold (i was dressed for a ride, not a walk.) made it back just as the sun was setting.

pro tip: don't run gravelking slicks with tubes. they might be okay tubeless, but they're so thin and fragile i had more flats this year than the past 5 put together.

Never ride your bike without the stuff to change a tube. I did it once and only had a puncture repair kit, it was a windy day and trying to find the puncture was a fucking nightmare, I did eventually and sorted it but it was awful.

Alright lads, ever since I've started cycling (2016) I've always lived in Hawaii or Florida but now I'm a bit more north. It's currently 45F outside with a windchill of 41, may not be much for some but for me it'll be the coldest I've ridden (that I can remember). I'm about to suit up and head out, wish me luck.

I experienced my first cycling-related cramp today (I've been riding for many years), my left inner thigh started contracting real hard when I was about 2km away from the top of the climb, had to stop and stretch for about five minutes because every time I straightened my leg the cramp would try and curl it back up
my mistake for deciding at the last moment that I would climb 5km more
anyhow, can't complain. the mountains are always nice. I'll start carrying a little mustard packet on my rides, apparently it helps against cramps.

Finally warmed up, -15C tonight felt surprisingly nice after the recent really cold weather. Group ride tomorrow night and it is supposed to be around -2C which is practically tropical.

Paths haven't been plowed since the last snow. Deep with deep post holes in a lot of spots, so I mostly stuck to the roads. Buried my front wheel to the axle taking a run at a spot I thought I could blast through.

Had to detour when I came across a bunch of police cars. They had the road blocked off but the MUP wasn't so I figured it was open, it was not. I checked on Twitter and they had been on the scene there for 8 hours and it never occurred to them to put up a cone or two.

Was going to take a few pictures tonight but camera battery died the second I turned it on.

I find it very odd how what sort of chances people are willing to take, such as passing on blind hills or just having very close calls, when it comes to passing me on the road. I think the fear of getting hit would only really be prevalent if the person were some sort of psychopath or I was just doing something incredibly stupid. I almost feel like I could just take up as much of a lane that I want to since a good 80% of the time people just pass in the oncoming lane on two way roads.

Last night the roads were great, tonight awful. Got up to 0C, the main roads are slushy, and the unsanded streets are loose snow.

Group ride tonight was longer than I expected. Slow going on loose trails and lots of stopping. Elapsed ride time when I got back home was 4:10 including the 2 hours it took to get there and back.

Winter ducks were in their usual spot where a storm outlet keeps the ice open all winter.

I was talking to a guy I know who went riding yesterday on his mountain bike and ended up getting 7 stitches after crashing on the sloppy roads. Fresh snow tomorrow, then cooler so that may help get the roads packed back down again.

Its been snowing too regularly to get a good fat bike trail established. A very slow loop of them today, I should have just stuck to bombing around alleys. Got up to 0C again, and the roads are just disgusting.

One nice thing about the wet roads contaminating my disc brake pads is that the brakes make a good horn for the MUP. Just give pedestrians a honk by tapping the brakes as I come up behind them.

Keeping between the metal lines. Path hasn't been thoroughly packed due to frequent snow and awful cold keeping the walkers away. 80 km/h winds tomorrow evening so the progress will be wiped away again. Though potentially nice firm drifts will form. But it generally takes even higher wind speeds to create what I call stryofoam snow. When the wind gets closer to 100 km/h it will make drifts hard enough to ride on top of.
