Redpill me on Brakeshifters.
I have pic rel and it works pretty good for me, but downtube shifting bothers me sometimes, especially when I want to shift both the rear and the front derailleur. What are the pros and cons of the brake lever style shifting method?

pros:
differ by brand but typically ergonomics based; gear shifting 'crispness', speed, comfort (modern brifters have much more surface area for riding on the hoods)

cons:
price, complexity, repairability, compatibility, often weight

personally the sweet spot for me is some decent modern brake only levers with bar end shifters; they're light, I've never had them fail in 10's of Kmiles riding and everything 9 speed is compatible with everything else

Get good. You should be able to do both with 1 hand in a fluid movement. That's an advantage

the big weakness of DT shifters is you cannot shift will standing/ sprinting which is bad for powering over rollers or attacking the base of climbs

Pros:
- HUGE ergonomic improvement
- being able to shift effortlessly will encourage you to shift *more*, helping you keep an optimal cadence and improving speed/endurance while reducing risk of injury from mashing too much

Cons
- unreasonably expensive compared to other styles of index shifters
- compatibility with the derailleurs is essential, so unless you're replacing everything at once finding ones that work with your other parts might take some effort
- if the frame is made for downtube shifters it might not be possible to mount handlebar shifters at all? Dunno.

I rather have DT shifters on my touring bike partially because I find it better for comfort/ fatigue over long distance.

i -have- ultegra STI that i could put on that in a dusty box so it's not a cope it's a preference.

As someone who has spent a lot of time on both kinds of shifters I'll add something that hasn't been emphasized enough: the experience you get with either type depends a lot on your specific equipment. Most downtube shifters are annoying because they need to be tightened way down or repeatedly tightened as you ride to hold tension, but get a nice one with a ratchet, indexing, or clutch built in, and when paired with a modern cassette they can be as smooth and intuitive to operate as the volume knob on your stereo. Similarly with brifters, those range from nasty clunky things like Shimano's old Sora STI levers to the easy linear sweep you get with Campy ultrashift Ergo levers.

Riding with downtube shifters (which typically means having fewer gears too) isn't as bad some people say for riding, since if anything can they make you a stronger rider because they force you think ahead and be aware of your cadence and power output and how you time your shifts. The real trade off with brifters is that in exchange for not requiring as much skill to use well, you must pair them with a fairly specific set of drivetrain components and keep them adjusted. We all know that many cyclists are intimidated by the prospect of adjusting their own gears and derailers, but I think it goes unnoticed by most experienced riders just how often we twiddle our barrel adjusters or have to feather our shift levers to get the ratchet to slide over just a hair more (I certainly didn't recognize this until I had a chance to spend time with electronic drivetrains that you set up and then never adjust unless something actually breaks).

how many speeds are on your bike ? .eg 2x6
and what handle bar position do you most often tend to use ?
there are some other types of shifter I can describe but its best to address them one at a time

I have one of these laying around and thinking about pic rel. Its under 30$ and its well built

The only concern I have is that i have Shimano Exage parts installed and they are almost 20yo so idk if they would be compatibale with newer parts

maybe you only have the brake levers and brake callipers from that series
the down tube shifters look to be from a slightly newer component group .eg SL-A550 or SL-1055
with luck your rear hub is something like FH-RM50
with bad luck you have HB-RA50
best case you have something like FH-A450
but I do not think you have any of this

its uhh complex, for sure you need to know what spacing width is between each sprocket and if that lines up with the index points of your intended shifter
smaller issue is over-lock nut distance 126 mm for old 6 and 7 speed systems with 30 mm wide free-hub body
130 mm for old 8 speed systems, I should get around to measure this
135 mm for newer 8 to 10 speed systems with 35 mm wide free-hub body (mtb system ?)

Presumably R2000, since it's been around since 2017. R2000 left shifter isn't compatible with 2400 front derailleur t. the official charts, let alone god-knows-what derailleur from 1947 or whatever that he has.

You pretty much have to try and find out. Good news it's more likely to work than not, and if it still doesn't work you can get ratio adapters for cheap to make them work.

But before you swap shifters around, you need to work on your bar position, because if the drops are too low to ride in comfortably, your bars are too low. Use a stem to bring them up a good bit and towards you a small bit. Take breaks mid ride to stretch your back, and do a flexibility workout at home. The goal should be to have the top of your bar level with the seat, and be able to ride in all positions comfortably.

7 speed exage?
any new 7 speed cassette you might buy are ALL compatible
As are ALL 7 speed shifters.
Switch to 8 speed? same applies.

Campagnolo 8 speed.
Try find some record or chorus ergopower levers. They are god tier.

The front shifting also works perfectly because they aren't indexed in the front, it's micro-ratcheting, which is basically a version of friction shifting so it's compatible with everything.

That's not normal condition. Even if you do a lot of riding, maybe once a month is acceptable.
Often the problem is a cracked compression washer (immediately under the d-ring bolt, almost always plastic). But it's possible that the problem isn't the shifter at all, but unnecessary friction further down the line (inside housing, or the bottom bracket cable guide).

I like this style, but those hoods are too fat. You can get "mounts only" from IRD, and I've put these on drilled out 105 levers (BL-1051). Much better.

Whenever you replace cables, spray the internals with Simple Green, work the ratchet back and forth a bunch, blow it out with compressed air, lube with plastic-safe light oil, done.

Had claris 2400 ones for 5 years that I only replaced because I was upgrading to the new version but they still worked perfectly fine. Ymmv, especially if you're buying chinkshit. Anyway if you do drop them in mud or something just blast it with piss then blast it with lube and it'll probably be good as new.

i have only ridden brake shifters, tubeless, and dick brakes. i want to give all alternatives a go. i think tubeless still seems better but i like that rim brakes don't require overbuilt forks and i think downtube shifters would be a lot of fun. plus friction shifting is just cool!

until you use them. There is a good reason why the shifters went up to the brake levers and only pretentious hipsters complained. Us who had to deal with downtube shifters for so long brifters were a godsend. Quick instantenious shifting while not having to take your hands off the handlebars, keeping control. It was not uncommon crashing just because you had to shift.
Spare yourself the bruises and embarrassment and leave the downtube shifters where they belong, on the trashheap and in the past.

No? I might take a small sip from time to time but mostly when I do a stop.
Drinking all the time is bad for riding, makes you more thirsty, makes you wanna pee which essentially wastes your water and decreases your performance. Proper hydration is important for riding but the key word here is proper. You do it wrong and you'll have a bad time.

This dude is dramatic. Brifters are better in all ways than downtube admitidly (outside of cost and durability). But downtubes still WORK and they still shift your bike. Downtubes are awesome on a beater or communter, less cables and breakable things.

Question for people who have tried different brifters. What are smoothest front ones to shift with. At the moment I'm running Shimano Claris (yeah yeah I know) and I really have to crank that shifter to get the front derailleur to move over no matter how I tweak it.
Is moving up the shimano line a better chance for getting smoother shifters or are other types better?

Have one bike with claris r2000 and one with ultegra shifters+105 derailleurs. The ultegra one is definitely better, front shifting is almost as effortless as rear shifting. The claris one is still perfectly acceptable though. Maybe your shit's out of adjustment or gunked up or something? Or maybe you just have the hand strength of a toddler.

Ive adjusted the derailleur so it should be fine. It's reasonably new but I could always run the cable anyway, I just think it's been like this from the start. No comment on toddler strength, I ride a bike not pick things up and put them down again.

i find this tends to be caused by 2 things
1: chainline
if your crank is too far outboard and the front derailer has to travel to the extreme limit of its high stop then the spring will be very tight
2: cable tension
often your front derailer cable doesn't have to be in tension. Often the first pull does a lot of taking up slack. As long as it can actually reach the outer bump stop with the full throw of the lever it's tight enough. Try making it less tight. Often that final throw isn't moving the derailer it's just making the cable very tight which is why it feels hard
