Red line is where it should go. Putting the station next to the Clemson campus. Where there is more likely to be frequent users of the hsr service. Instead of going south around Anderson.

It's almost like someone looked at a map and saw the MARTA line and said, "Oh, there's rail, I'll just put the HST line there too!"
If we are talking all hypotheticals anyway, It would be far better to just go from Athens to the south part of the perimeter and connect to Hartsfield there. It would be in a sketchy part of town, sure, but it's far less developed down there. And MARTA runs right into the airport so people would still have access to the city that way.

A southerly airport connection does make a lot of sense and it could still potentially intercept the east line of Marta around Indian Creek or beyond, perhaps a 1-station extension.

I don't think a route that doesn't have a station in or directly adjacent to the city center will get taken seriously at the planning stages though.

don't get me wrong, I think having a station in downtown/midtown would be great, I just think the feasibility of such a project is dead on arrival. I recently drove through the connector after having moved away for 3 years and holy fuck the place has gotten EVEN MORE crowded. It wouldn't just be the car infrastructure that would need to go, but dozens of giant skyscrapers and part of GTs campus at this point would need to be sacrificed for the rail line.

If the state was smart they'd snap up the land under what used to be Hulsey and/or Tilford yards. Hulsey is just east of downtown and Tilford is a few miles NW of downtown but could work too. Both have already been laid out for railroad operations and the neighborhoods around them are used to trains, and both can build along existing rail ROWs to go northeast with some work (the trains won't be going full speed nearing a terminus anyway). Hulsey is already between two Marta stations, linking up Tilford with public transit would be costlier but the whole downtown station has been hyped as "multi modal" for decades, so using buses would work until a better link could be installed. The Proctor Creek line could be extended northward to it, if the money was there.
