General Aviation (GA) refers to all non-military or Part 121 flying. GA flying includes gliders, single engine trainers, twin training, Part 135 prop or jet, corporate, fire fighting, personal ownership, fractional ownership, etc. Regional peasants pls get bullied.

What's the consensus on Diamond's 42 and 62? I think they're an interesting GA aircraft but they could be huge pieces of shit for all I know. I've heard they're relatively expensive

Personally not a fan of diesel. They stink, make a ton of vibration and noise, require MORE maintenance and really just make sense for generators, ships, big rigs.

I have flown the DA 62 for around 19 hours now and I can say that it is almost certainly a massive waste of money. Don't get me wrong it is an extremely beautiful and safe plane but our max cruising speed is around 175 kts which isn't the greatest. The Fadec system is really nice and basically turns the plane into a push to start. No joke I can literally start the plane in less than 30 seconds and not having to adjust the mixture means that the engines are preforming at their maximum capabilities all the time. Be advised that the DA 62 takes jet A negative so the fuel is going to cost more than your typical multi engine. Overall I'd much rather have a tbm than this plane.

If part 91 and/or the aircraft doesn’t require a type, you can fake it till you make it as if you were a safety pilot.

If part 135 and fully trained and checked for your aircraft, the company could have op spec A062, or you’re stuck with logging only legs that require you. Such as 135 pax without autopilot, under certain rest/flight time scenarios that require a SIC, taking off under C079 which requires a takeoff alternate, or flying internationally with a pic above age 55. Not that the list is extensive.

If it pertains to the largest part 135 cargo operator in the US, their charter FOs are logging time illegally unless the specific leg requires an SIC for above reasons. This operator doesn’t have a SIC logging exemption. If this applies to you, ask away

The red flag for me is that he was not using an emergency parachute and didn't have a PLB. If you fly with a parachute you fly with an emergency one not a sport one. And if you fly with an emergency parachute you always have a PLB with you because being alive in the middle of nowhere isn't very useful. He was flying with a sport one judging by the straps and ripcord position and handle.

Oh and there were clearly a few suitable outlanding locations.

Yes, it's pretty obvious he has a sport chute. The D-rings for the quickdrop slip-offs are a very visible tell. You don't have those on an emergency chute, only on sport chutes with a separate reserve.

dpe made me fly out to some bumfuck airport that was surrounded by steep forest valleys and was 2500 feet long. I failed the first time with this dude for not giving briefings and apparently not testing the brakes.

I had no other dpe choices this time because my 60 days were about to lapse. I get in the plane, do my runup and realize I forgot to save the chart supplements on foreflight. Dpe notices Im trying to figure out how to get the center frequency but also realizes I do not have any chart supplements. I would simply download the charts on my phone if I had service to do so, but yeah somehow they got deleted off my phone and I did not have them on my ipad.

Dpe then takes the controls and taxis us back and says he is doing me a favor by not failing me. Takes my 450$ plus tip and tells me to come back next week before my shit lapses. He says he wont charge me as much, but I do not want to give this man another dime. Ive spent 1300$ on these two commercial checkrides and I have yet to take off in a plane.

I haven't failed any check rides before this one and I'm going to have to do the whole check ride over again if I do not do it next week. I'm thinking fuck this dude because it clearly isn't working with him.

Really struggling with my CPL.

I’m a leaf. So we’re pretty much relegated to doing the online Harvsair course which is mind numbing amount of content. Need to write 3 consecutive full length practice exams at 75% before they give you a letter of recommendation for the actual write.
I know changes have to be made in my life to get there. It’s honestly a ‘physical’ feeling in my head on a daily basis, wake up and just feel this weight in my forehead that makes it feel like it takes energy to keep my eyes open.
Got my PPL 3 years ago. It was work but I don’t remember struggling nearly this much.
Am I alone in this?
Any suggestions on things I could do to improve would be appreciated.

I just want to fly pic related. I actually have one, have about 20 hours logged so far (also own a 180) That’s the bitch of it. Doesn’t make a lot of sense to have a commercial to fly a cropduster but it is what it is..
I feel like a fucking retard and it is driving me insane.

The last longhaul flight I took was on a BA 747 that was 10 abreast. I was 16 and of average height (5'7") and it was okay. But my dad has flown from Toronto to Addis, 12-13 hours on a 9-abreast Ethiopian 787. Big yikes

I’m halfway through my PPL and feeling good about my piloting, and I can finance a CPL independently with my govt contracting job but the thought of doing that AND putting three or so years into a random degree to check a box fills me with dread.

How easily could I take a fresh CPL and get work that would get me to 1500? I don’t need to fly a mainstream carrier but how viable is anything else without college?

In Canada, 10k to 13k is allowed for half an hour. Past that, oxygen required. Realistically, almost 20k is able if fit and healthy. In theory.

There's a difference between cruising at 10k every day and going up once. Physiologically the body adapts to the high altitude, but it takes time (like going to Denver from New Orleans, the first day you're out of breath).

Depends on the airline and your goals. In general I’d prioritize a base you want to live in, a base with movement in both seats of a given airplane, and the opportunity to fly. The ERJ Is the more “comfortable” airplane and generally speaking most of them are newer and more reliable. Dunno about republics fleet though because they’re aging.

Besides that it’s really up to you to pick based on your goals during and after whatever regional you pick.

Probably not. Maybe with some small aircraft but generally not a good idea here cause half the year is cold and you'll shock cool the engine and be in a pickle if you have to overshoot.
Also in some pipers and the C182 you wouldn't even have a solid downwind, to base, to final. Would just be one turn from downwind to threshold

The difference between me at 250 hours and me at 1500 hours was insane. Problem is that I am a rare case. I built experience flying tons of single pilot in higher performance aircraft. Instructing is probably the worst way to become a great pilot because after the first few hundred hours it becomes so routine that you stop learning to think outside the box. Get your time and move on, the rest of us have had to do it and some of us chose to learn as much as we could along the way.

Really, though, you should be checking current and expected conditions/AIRMET charts pre-flight and know when to scrub. Sometimes it's bad enough conditions or veteran enough controller that you can tell it's a bad idea just from the tone of voice giving you the data.

I’m only early on into my instrument rating, so I don’t know shit about shit, but another anon in /tg/ was talking about how planes can’t fly during winter in Antarctica because it’s too cold for planes. This sounded like bullshit to me since at altitude it’s just as cold if not colder than Antarctic temperatures, and Antarctica is a desert so icing conditions wouldn’t really be that much of a factor either, especially for a plane equipped with deicing. I figure it’s more likely a case of it not being profitable to bring FBO logistics to Antarctica, and so airstrips and hangars that can operate planes out of those conditions are not maintained. Anyone with a better idea able to give their thoughts?

ORD and DEN seem to have the most variety in pairings and movement in both seats, so I'd tentatively start there in your search for more information. Some of our west coast bases also hold a decent amount of variety but the 175 tends to skew more senior in places like SFO, SEA, and SAN. LAX just went very junior on the ERJ but I don't expect that to continue because it had alot to do with those bases opening and vacancies needing to be filled. SLC is not as senior as you think and does benefit from a decent pairing mix as well, you'll just be very lucky to upgrade into it in a few years' time.

It's hard to feel "ready", use your CFIs judgement if you have a good CFI. They shouldn't want you to fail. You should be able to do every maneuver easily, be able to do the different landings and take offs, along with the basic navigation with VORs, dead reckoning, and GPS. You also should at least know where to find shit whether its in the FARAIM or you planes POH. The DPE won't expect you to know everything, but they will expect you to know where to find everything. Your CFI should do a mock check ride with you. Anyways good luck, just keep it calm and fly the plane.

Make sure you know where to find everything he could potentially ask you. You don't need to know everything by heart but you gotta know where to find it. Don't be afraid to take your time to explain something. As for the flying portion you just need to remember to explain everything you are doing like you are teaching a braindead student. The actual maneuvers should be pretty easy since you've done them all plenty of times before. Now just from the other side.

Always, refer to your AFM for when PA to start leaning at. If there’s no guidance, see if there’s guidance on when to lean for takeoff at a high elevation field, and use that instead. Let's just set the gliding into people thing aside, everything else about it is still fucked.

Not that guy, I think private we did somewhere between 30-45 degrees. Commercial was 45-60. I think right on 45.
Flying a 182 and I don't know if it's somehow the constant speed prop, the power, or extra weight. But they're monkey easy now, and I don't even have to add power to maintain altitude. Could also be experience helping, spent the last 1500 hours flying pipelines and doing some maneuvering

The end of the regionals. Mainline legacies would take back their Wholly owned companies. Delta will do it first with Endeavor. They will absorb all of Endeavor pilots as Delta pilots. Then AA will do the same.

One person can fly a C-46/7/DC-3 as GA.
But.
The C-46/7 is ~18k lbs. You need at least two if you go above 12.5k lbs empty, but ONLY IF its being used for air transport or certed for two pilot operation only.
So if you plan to just dick around on your own and can cert it for solo, yes. If you plan to transport goods or make it a sightseeing plane, you need two.

I imagine you guys are the most knowledgeable about this topic, so here it goes. I'm going to apply for a job where I'll have to write code for flight control systems, and they mention "system knowledge within ATC" as one of the desirable qualifications (I meet everything else in their list). Can I bullshit my way into saying that I do have a degree of knowledge about ATC? I used to play lots of MFS in the past, could this be an acceptable justification or will it make me look like a clown?

Going through training right now but I didn't have anyone to foot the bill. Worked my ass of in my twenties and saved every cent. Built enough to either buy a house or spend the money on flight training and decided for the latter since I couldn't fucking stand my office space type job anymore.

I haven't had to write a cover letter in my career path yet, but I think it'd be appropriate to bring it up there if you felt comfortable enough. That'd open the door to it coming up in the interview probably.

Maybe the fact of the huge amount of money they are losing on the WOs. Delta and AA are spending so much money on their WOs compared to contracted carriers that it makes having WO a huge financial liability. BUT at the same time, they can’t afford to shut down WO operations because they are relying too heavily on their flying, and the contract carriers could never ever carry that load.
